spark plug question.
« on: May 04, 2009, 10:11:26 AM »
So ive been running the plug that came with the bike (BR8E).  I went to my local dealership to pick up a new plug and he gave me an expensive plug, i think its BR9EIX.  He said it has a hotter spark.  My other plug was running fine just a tad lean which i ended up adjusting.  Now if i put the new plug in do i have to run the bike richer?  I did the plug test and the new plug came out grey.

If you weren't having any problems with the old B8ES why did you change to one that took more money out of your pocket . You know you can pick them up at advanced auto for around $2.00. Not sure why he sold you a hotter plug if you have a lean condition, sounds like he shouldn't be working the parts counter. What did you adjust ? needle or bigger jet ? What fuel are you running? How does the bike feel in comparison to before you made change? Need more info. CBX

CBX,
I Know I am getting old, But, NGK plugs usually get hotter the lower the number??? I also use the ES series, as they are affordable, and I have not had any problems with them. I know that a B8ES is a hotter plug than the B9ES. Maybe somebody will educate me on the BR9EIX being a hotter plug??

Taco / CBX,
I would think if the plug is Gray in color, she is running VERY HOT, I know just enough on the K5 to be Dangerous (No pun intended David), but my mostly stock K5, K2.5, Moded K2.5, K1.25 Has a Coffee with creme color plug. The only times I have seen a Gray colored plug is when a CDI advanced ignition too far (started to hole the piston/Mototek Box), and when our Secret Weapon EI Carburetor started sucking air in thru the choke circuit (Ran Awesome til the piston and cylinder became one). Go get a B8ES thru Advanced or Auto Zone and recheck (be cautious as it sounds very lean).Would the EIX Plug protrude further into the combustion chamber to burn hotter??? Where is Friar when you need him

Yea, im sticking with the BR8ES because it it has that tan color that everyone is looks for.  I just wanted a spare spark plug and i wanted to see if it would make a difference. It seemed to run hotter with the IEX in it too. I thought the lower the number the cooler the plug was??? O well whats 10$?  Oh and when i ran the IEX in it i turned the pilot airscrew in a turn to see if it would richen the mix a little bit, then i ran the old plug in it and checked the old plug and it came out black and sooty.  This isn't bad right, just a little rich???  O and im running AMS dominator oil and 93 pump fuel. 32:1.
