KX500 Original / Re: 00 kx5 case mods

I drilled mine out with a simple handrill and put a bronze bushing in. Its now better than new! I may even have some extra bushings still...

What type and size bit did you use to drill and what size bushing? I bought one, but may have to modify it. Did you jog weld it to get it to hold still?

Thanks.

KX500 Original / Re: Alternative kickstart pedals for 1985 KX500B1
« Last post by waigy on October 11, 2023, 06:41:14 PM »
I just checked again and the new pedal assemblies (boss and pedal) I can find easily available (for 175 GBP) are the wrong part number even though they are advertised as for the 1985.
They are for the 1998 to 2004 KX500 (13064-1201).
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/404137088709
I messaged the seller and he said he has sold this part to owners of the 1985 and says they fit, but can anyone here confirm that?

KX250 / KX125 / -01 KX250 crankcase repair or replace?
« Last post by Asdow on October 03, 2023, 04:04:19 AM »
Hi all!

I have what I think is a 2001 KX250 that I'm restoring back to working order. Disassembled the engine for overhaul, and noticed that there is a crack going through the output shaft bearing seat on the left crankcase half. The case has been welded at some point by a previous owner, but they apparently did not do anything to the bearing seat surface.

I'm now wondering whether it would be worth it to have a shop fix the crack by welding and machining the seat or should I just forget that and buy a used left half on ebay. If replacing it is the way to go, am I correct in the assumption that any case half between -97 and -01 would work?
I live in the EU and pretty much all of the used parts I saw for sale are located in the US, so the final price for the case depending on the year and listing would end up being something around 350 to 650 USD after shipping, VAT and customs duty (roughly 1.3 times the price + shipping).

KX500 Original / Re: Castor Based Premix - who's using it?

I been running klotz beanol lately in the k5 and kdx. It smells awesome and I just realized the factory is only a couple hours away from me.  It claims to be de-gummed. Still feels kind of sticky, I wonder what my internals are going to look like. I need to pull the KDX apart soon because the counter shaft started leaking. Probably time for a new piston in there anyways. It gets a lot more use than the 500.

Is nobody making comments anymore?
The guy who started this theme/thread was Umberto. One of the really good guys. Are you still around Umberto?
streetsleeper (Jonnie Byford currently in the UK.

I appreciate the feedback, but unfortunately I don't own the website to make major changes.  Perhaps Danger4U2 would be a better person to send your messages to.  He hasn't been by in a while, but I know he monitors the email from the site. 👍👍
)

UMBERTO, IF THIS MESSAGE OF YOURS WAS MEANT FOR ME (streetsleeper aka Jonnie Byford) THEN I AM EXTREMELY GRATEFUL. YOU WERE ALWAYS ONE OF THE MOST HELPFUL/KNOWLEDGEABLE AND COURTEOUS MEMBERS WHO REGULARLY POSTED ON THE SITE. I KNOW WE ARE ALL GETTING OLDER. I AM 62 NEXT IN '24 AND THOUGH I'M SEPARATED FROM THE KX AS WELL AS MY FAMILY BY THE POND AND 10,000 KLICKS, I'M STILL AS KEEN AS MUSTARD!

I WISH YOU ALL THE VERY BEST,
streetsleeper (Jonnie B currently in GB)

THIS SHOWED UP IN RED FONT/TEXT ON A PINK HIGHLIGHTED BACKGROUND.
Warning: this topic has not been posted in for at least 120 days.
Unless you're sure you want to reply, please consider starting a new topic.

First of all, it's a shame that there have been some major changes in my absence. Reason? I don't seem able to simply send messages to the really Helpful/Knowledgeable/Friendly fellers I met when I first joined KXRiders.com back in 2018.
I don't know whether you're still around guys, or only accept email or personal messages (?), but it's important to me because although my KX and I are currently separated by 10,000 km and a big pond called the Atlantic Ocean, I've lost NONE of my keenness and enthusiasm for the project.
The world has changed a lot since I last read this thread, but funnily enough when I Googled "KX Castor Oil" the very first result to pop up was:

Castor Based Premix - who's using it? (Dated: 17th December 2018 and done by "streetsleeper" AKA me.)
Yep, I came back to the UK as my tenants moved out after 4 years so I had to sort the house out. Then we got hit by COVID-19, so no flights back to my family for 2 years; followed by unemployment (not easy when you're a really old geezer like me), and the world these days favours Bluetooth and Youth over Blueblood and Long in the Tooth - LOL! (really, I'm laughing out loud, 'cause !); plus it's gone mad with "Woke" stuff like the LGB on the QT - Alphabetti Spaghetti MGBGT.
BUT, I got back to Mexico in March/April 2023 and got the guy from whom I bought the KX500, and who subsequently stored it for all those years for me, to deliver it to my family's house where it's under a roof and plastic.
In the UK I just had to get a 2-stroke, but I'm boracic lint on the DWP's UC (you'll get it if you're British), so I got a Honda 50cc Stepthru made mostly of plastic (for £150) and I'm running it on, you guessed it, 45-year-old Castrol R30. And guess what else? She runs perfectly, plus, "I Love The Smell Of Castor Oil In The Morning - It's The Smell Of History!"

KX500 Original / Re: 03 kx500 compression?
« Last post by Bengt Weil on September 13, 2023, 04:58:18 AM »
According to the '88 Kawasaki Service Manual for the KX500, cylinder Compression (usable range) is 105-164psi.  The supplemental manual for '90-'03 does not have any updated information, so the same usable range should apply.

Based on your compression findings, it should be OK, though maybe not optimum.  I would definitely do a leak down test to verify there are no air leaks (crank seals, etc) before running it hard.

As for the air filter, most anything is good now days.  On my 500, I us a No Toil filter and associated cleaning system.

I would imagine it would be best to remove the top end, make sure there are no obvious issues with the cylinder plating, clean the power valves, check big end rod bearing and reed petals and re-ring or replace the piston and small end bearing if clearances warrant it.  Much better safe than sorry...  Good luck!

KX500 Original / 03 kx500 compression?
« Last post by Pointhunter75 on September 09, 2023, 01:49:45 PM »
How much compression should my 03 have?  And can I test it with only the carb on it?  No air box/ filter. Hasn't been Crunk since 2011. I drained the carb but still just now cleaned it. Also I need an air filter.  What is the best these days?  Been out of the game.  I liked twin air back in the day. . Ok I put my old mx boots on and kicked it till I was tired... only got 125 psi. I'm 48 years old and out of shape with bony legs lol.  When I bought the bike in 2011 it was nothing like the ragged looking 86 I test rode with hardly any plastics.  That thing would stand up in 5th gear at 8th throttle...I had this one jetted and it helped a little bit was still nothing like that old ragged 86. I wonder if the crank seal is bad or maybe just needs a rebuild after this compression check?  Opinions please.
Edit
Apparently this is not the place to get common info on these bikes.  Can't believe not one reply.

a buddy of mine has the panthera kit on a 86 cr500 and it works flawlessly after upgrading the crappy solenoid it came with.
