Title: Reed cage
Post by: Letsride614 on November 17, 2011, 12:47:43 AM
Which way should the arrow on the reed cage be pointed up or down? I have a 01 kx500 its pointing up and a 02 thats pointing down. Thanks

normally when it comes to anything like that...with arrows,or gaskets,rings...any and all markings go UP,unless stated otherwise by the manufactuer. The fact that you have two different bikes that have the reed cage in different positions, should be safe to say that either way is fine. How does the one with the arrow pointing down run,and how does the one pointing up run....if there's no difference,it'll be fine. When I got my v-force2,it showed the "V-Force" tag installed on top/up....but because of clearance issues,it had to face the botton/down...I've been running it that way since just fine.
Let's see if anyone else has any input on this.

In this case, it should point down.

Hey thanks , the one pointing up doesnt run quiet as crisply or idle as good as the one pointing down and both are jetted the same. I noticed this when I got the other and it was haveing a hard time cleaning out compared to the original.

very little, thats the 01 it runs great. My 02 looks just about as good but doesnt idle as well and takes for ever to clean out.

you did say that they're both jetted the same right?...maybe try cleaning the s*&t outa the carb if you have'nt already. My 95 was doing something similar,so I just went with a 7 sparkplug which is the next size hotter...and that cleared it right up...not that that's gonna fix it for you,but it's a good cheap way to start diagnostics.

can't believe it makes a differance  as been looking at the reed cage and it seems to be almost identical both ways
I Know the arrow is ther for a reason  ,anyone see the differance?

the '90 kx500 cage i measured appears centered at the flange. I had another cage here from a '86 kx250 that was 2mm offset towards the arrow. since kawi used the same basic cage for 20years my guess is the arrow remained on the outer mold regardless of rather it relevent or not. May as well install it correctly just to be sure.

on mine with the arrow pointing up I found it was not sealing completely for some reason, but sealed fine with the arrow pointing down. I could not visually tell any diff but it does Idle now very slow, so slow you think its going to quit but never does and also no surging when throttle is shut on staights. I'm just glad its working right.
