people say the only difference is the pre 88 is a single ring and 89 up is double ringed

Single Ring & Flat Top Design..........89 & Later Design, Dual Rings & Dome Top.

Think I have the Flat Top at my shop....will look when I have a chance & post a pic.
Hope this helps

That must be an aftermarket piston or just a different compression piston from kawi. Every factory 85 I have opened up has had a completely flat top. If you want to stick with 85 parts just keep watching ebay. From the little research I did back when I had an 85 the newer pistons will work. I don't think there were any mods needed to do it either. I would just take a lot of measurements of the old one and compare them to measurements of the new one. 2 rings is better than 1 anyway.

if goat is right,(and I have no reason to believe he's not), that could be a kwak piston for the 86 kx5, as this model did have a domed top, and single ring setup.K.

not sure, but if a 85 is flat top piston and new style piston is dome.  Wouldnt you gain alot or to much compression?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/KAWASAKI-NOS-ROCKY-PISTON-KIT-KX500-STD-1985-/350503898332?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item519ba90cdc&vxp=mtr

plenty more sizes also available on ebay

check your bore size as it is possible to fit a cr500 dome piston to a 85kx

if you are going to fit a 88on FLAT TOP piston you should recut the squich in the to suit the new piston
