Title: unstoppable oil leak
Post by: 1989kawasaki on August 25, 2011, 12:45:26 PM
i cant seem to stop the front sprocket seal to stop leaking, ive put in seals , o rings and still there is always a red river underneath my bike.

how can i put an end to the leak or slow it down so its not that noticeable?

Did you replace the metal slide colar??  Seals wear grooves in them... Then never seal..       also putting the seal in with some case sealer on it (around the outside where it seals against the case) is a good practice for ALL seals...

One more thing..

You dont know the MEANING of Unstoppable Oil Leaks.... Till you own a British motorcycle

no, the collar is a discontinued part. i do have a few collars but they dont work. i have heard of people on this site putting RTV in where the seal and collar is.

British motorcycles leak all the time?  :|

Hmm.. I see the later ones stacked two O-rings up....   Wonder if the Later ones would fit?   Or possibly a Kx500 one?

Wouldnt be hard to make one... Have a lathe?

You could take a British motorcycle 100% appart, wipe all the oil off every single part of it off with a rag... Put it back together, Drop it in a VAT of yamabond....... and it would still leak...

copy and paste from a members kx500 measurements

The collar is 25mm ID X 32mm OD X 10.5mm Length.

MY measurements

25MM ID x 30 OD X 9.53MM length. maybe the length was greater cause the sprocket spins over it

install new o-ring, collar, sprocket. Then, place a thin shim between the sprocket and retainer clip. this keeps pressure on the o-ring. We always used sea-doo steering shims (they come in different thicknesses and fit around the shaft perfect). This always worked for me,you might try it if you can find something that will work.

Had that problem when I was running ATF, went back to 10w-40 amsoil motorcycle synthetic and I have not had the problem since.  Something to try.

I am sure that I have used KX500 sleeves in my Tecates.which use the same as kx250s. If memory serves me right you have to use the 500 seal also do to a larger OD sleeve.
The biggest issue I have seen on them leaking is getting some tension on the Oring like was stated use shims under the snapring some of the aftermarket sprockets are thinner thus there is no tension held in on O ring

so what your saying is that a new kx500 collar and seal and o ring? and an oem sprocket? is what i need to get

yes use the 500 parts. the sprocket dosnt matter as long as you make sure its tight you should have to work to get the snap ring on .use shims if its not.

Hey there 89'er
If you don't swap over to all 5oo parts, get the measurement for the 250 collar.  Maybe I can find some stock that could be cut to fit.
I have seen several options available.

For those of us who don't have a lathe... yet :|

25MM ID x 30 OD X 9.53MM length. maybe the length was greater at one point cause the sprocket spins over it wearing it down

but dont you think it would be easier to buy 500 parts?

We always used sea-doo steering shims (they come in different thicknesses and fit around the shaft perfect). This always worked for me,you might try it if you can find something that will work.

I had the same problem with my 125. I went to replace the seal thinking that was the problem, but I noticed it was leaking from the o-ring. I replaced the o-ring but still had the problem. It would not stop leaking and the chain would collect the leaking oil and throw it all over the place.

It needs pressure against the o-ring to create a seal. My sprocket wore down a little around the circlip reducing its thickness, causing a little play on the shaft.

My solution: I flattened a washer with a hammer and anvil then drilled the center to the size I needed, and it stopped the leak.

wow,, i havent been able to find the time to do this thing until now.

ok so the kx500 sprocket collar will not fit

but the dimensions are SO close i mean very close.

it is 2mm wider and 1mm taller when you lay it down flat

is anyone here an experienced machinist that can cut this for me?

I thought you meant too thick.careful marking and use of a dremel or other rotary tool, (practice on scrap if you aren't too familliar with one) should be able to sort this.mark the area you need removing on the face and slowly remove it, and after this is removed smooth the faces with wet and dry.hth, K.
