Title: Widest rear tire. typical supermoto setup
Post by: ZETTNORCAL on August 19, 2011, 03:20:18 PM
What is the widest rear tire that will fit on a 17"at not interfere with the chain.   160? This will be on my 04 KX250f/500 conversion.   I just got it California plated!!!

  Good Deal Zett!   :-D
Sorry I don't have a clue about the tire, But I also think this would be a cool canyon runner/ Dash to work  set-up.

Without divulging anything you may not want to share, Is your bike "Experimental" by any chance?

I run a 150 on my 500..

160 would fit.. But needs offset, and still rubs chain alot...

What is your rim width?  I ran a 4.25" wide rim with a 160 and no clearance issues, BUT, it really screws with the profile of the tire, The 4.25" rim should have a 150 tire and the 160 should be used with at least a 4.5" or 5".

I run a 4.25 rim for exactly the reason you stated profile...

there was a guy on Supermotojunkie that put a 160 on a 5" on his 500...   and RUB city.... so I went 150...

i have a 4.25 rim with a 150. it still rubbed with a non o-ring chain so i built a guide to keep it off the tire.

My warp9 4.25 with 150mm BT-016 rubs very much badly.
I'm thinking about a 140, or offsetting my rim to the right about 1/4 inch.

I thought I read on this site some KX500's were being fitted with older CBR600 wheels. I believe those are 5" wide with 160's.
would they rub too?

I do alot black top track riding.......I sometimes drop from a 190 to a 180 depending on the track.....Bigger isn't always better.....smaller will allow you to go from max lean side to side easier.  Bigger will give you a bit bigger contact patch at full lean but will increase effort to steer.

Most guys that put 17's on a converted MX bike go with a 4.25in rim in the rear and run a 150 tire as you run into the least headaches as apposed to try and squeeze a 160 in. My suggestion is run the 150 with a non o-ring chain and you shouldnt have to do much if any adjusting. But if you do you can dish the rim to the caliper side a bit or if you need a durastic fix guys use an addition chain guide to route the chain or spacers on the sprockets as suggested. Also some guys will just shave the chain side of the tire before they put them on to prevent rubbing.

Keep in mind that if you have two tires the same size it doesnt necessarily mean their widths are the same, some tires are wider than others. If i remeber correctly the michelins tend to be on the wider side.

Place I called a about doing mine knew the KX5 setup and said they offset the rim .25" and use a 150. Trouble free is a good thing!
