Title: newb from san diego area
Post by: BronkoRob on August 17, 2011, 02:02:00 PM
been riding an 01 YZ250f for the past 2 years, 4 strokes.....i can check the box, been there done that.  i think im going back to 2 strokes and staying there.  anyways, been wanting a 500 nearly my whole life.  finally fell into one for dirt cheap and just could not leave without it.  drained the tank, cleaned the carb, and started right up.  need a new chain, and fork seals, and thats about it.  i think i did pretty good for 600 bucks!  soooooo anyone want to buy a nice yz250f???, cause i think its just going to collect dust from this point on.

now im jealous,  im pretty bummed about the laws CA has about plating bikes.  yeah im a big fan of corral canyon for day rides.  do you race D38?  ive been thinking about giving it a shot, everytime i get serious about something came up at school or work.  you race the 500?  yup i have a few vintage bikes.  the silver/red stripe is a 74 YZ125A, yellow fender is a SC500 roller(got it for free with a blown motor, sold the motor and the rest i cant get rid of and dont have the heart to cut up and trash), in the very back is my wifes 85 XR100R, and the blue YZ250F.  ive always rode old bikes til i got the 250F, the older bikes had personality and were always a lot of fun.

im 28, dont worry its not hard to keep up with me.  like i said before i used to only ride old bikes,  you can only go so hard and fast on 4 inches of travel.  i have only recently got kinda serious about riding as much as i can, maybe the past 8 months or so.  mainly because i want to race some D38 races this fall.  your going to have to fill me in on those loop holes for plates.

Welcome aboard!

I'm a transplant from San Diego now living in Las Vegas for 12 years. Spent 22 years between Coronado, Imperial Beach, North Island and Ramona (12) years!

Since leaving Kalifornia and an 11% state tax bracket I can afford a new dirt bike every two years and for the most part ride any type of bike any where any time of the year in Nevada! Haven't looked back since 2000. I grew up in Central Kalifornia in a place called Paso Robles!

Welcome aboard!

NICE, i moved here from Utah 6 years ago when i joined the navy.  i miss the freedom of riding pretty much anywhere that public land, and not having to deal with riding sticker seasons.  it seems like you are penalized for getting new bikes.  with such high taxes you think they would encourage you to buy more new bikes so the state can get their hands in that pot of money also.  but im here and im making do with what i got, or what CA will allow me to have.

Ah... Same age (give or take a few months)....

I grew up riding 4" of travel also...   and in many ways... still prefer it..     You will catch me out in the desert on my Old Husqvarnas and bultacos more than you will the new Long travel stuff...

The 500 is still a WEAPON in D38...  Feared by many....   Especially the Roost...

Loop holes are easy...

Im a happy customer...   I can give you more details VIA PM...   as I have already tossed out more info than I care to toss out in a public forum...

KxPegger... dont EVEN get me started on Kalifornia...     I have looked at moving to AZ many times...

Welcome BronkoRob. I'm right up the road from you in Capo Beach. I raced 250s in District 37 for years, and want to start competing again on my 500. I've logged a ton of off rode miles (mines not plated, but I want a full race bike so no headlights, computers, kickstands, etc.) in the last year and feel very confident riding the 500 now. Never ridden in San Diego County, but I'm open to try.

it would be cool to get a couple 500s together and go riding sometime.  i need to get some hours on it and get a feel for it off road before i go out and race it.  maybe we should try get a trip together with the socal guys.

i really hope not.  but since i got the bike on a whim, and just couldnt pass up on the price i now have 2 killer modern bikes.  both are for sale, my KX and the YZ250F.  i will end up keeping whatever bike i have left.  i really cant afford 2 newer bikes.  i know i will ride both and keep dumping parts, time, money into both.  im actually getting more people interested in my YZ, which is good for me, since the KX is newer, nicer and a killer upgrade.  so i really hope the YZ sells.  that and my wife is getting tired of me dragging bikes home,  as you saw in the pics, the garage is getting a little crowded.

You will find the kx will need Very little parts in it's life..  Tires chains sprockets....

Your 250f on the otherhand... Is a ticking timebomb grenade of a motor waiting to cost you $3500

dont remind me!  this is my first and last 4 stroke.  maybe an xr one day, but never again with the high strung indy car 4 strokes.  yeah it was just TOO good to pass up, so i rolled home with a KX in the truck and a not so happy wife in the garage...lol   i got the kx is priced kinda high so the YZ should sell sooner   glad the wife doesnt check this place out...lol  but until than i got to register the bike and im ready to ride!  like i said i need to get some seat time on this bad boy.

i have taken it up and down the street so far...lol  i now know what you guys are talking about with the surging of power after full throttle.  so from what i have read that means the jetting is close to where it needs to be...?  something new to me that i will have to get used too.  from what i have ridden on the bike the jetting seems good, love the 2 stroke throttle response, runs smooth and starts right up.  i dont have my notebook with me, but i believe the main was a 168, i want to say the pilot was 58??  or at least near there, and clip is center of needle.  the bike is bone stock, so its probably whatever it came with from the factory.  i will have to search around here to see what i should be running for this elevation.  any hot tips or setup advice?  ive ordered fork seals, chain, and fork guards for it, so once i swap those out i will take it out to ride for real and see what it can really do.  only bummer is the red sticker, D*#* you california!!  so once im in "season" i will be riding as often as i can, and always looking for people to ride with.

HI Guys:  I've been lurking on the site for a year or so.  Local here in SD  I have been riding kx500's since 93...  Not a racer anymore, but I can ride.  Mostly in Baja.  Will have to ride with you guys soon.  I have one with a plate too!   Don  760 519-8696

any of the socal guys going to be at the D38 race on the 25th?  im going to try and make it out there.  between work and school, if i have time to get all the parts and the bike ready id like to run it, otherwise i will be out to check out the other 500s i hear run out there.  id would be kinda cool to meet a few of the guys from this site, and check out the their hot desert setups.

Perhapse...  I normally don't race till the holoween race....   As it's HOT out there..

As it gets closer, I'll see how dialed I can get my jetting...

If anything I would be up for meeting up on K5's and watching the race / riding around...

Trust me you don't want your first race to be in 105 deg weather... You'll never want to race desert again...  Also good way to get hurt if your not in good shape..

Well when it cools off I'm down for a desert ride!! But I work in the heat out here in CAMPO so I won't ride if it gets much above 90. What are the temps up there like mid summer and winter?
