Hey everybody, I'm Keven. I live right off of I-65 between Cullman and Decatur Alabama. I've been out of riding for about 7 or 8 years now but I've been the last 3 weekends and I'm hooked again! I have a 99 cr 250 and an 03 kx 500 that I just bought from here.

Hey Keven,
Welcome to the site!
Glad you signed in and posted up. If you got the bike from a member here there should be a record of it.
That could be valuable info in the future! There is usually someone around to answer questions or at least point you in a direction.
Take care,

Yeah that thing is terrifying! It's the only comparison I have as it's the only one I had ridden before and mine's def not right! Lol I'll get it there, just gotta get it figured out..

Sure wish you'd get in that carb for me and check out that jetting! Lol that's what's holding mine back pretty sure.....
-
The carb is no biggie, after you tinkered with it about 1000 times
It is always better to have another set of eyes and ears on a project.
Let me find that team green chart and we'll go from there.
This should be it. click on the link and it will download the pdf to your 'putor

If not go to the 500 original thread, open it and there is a sticky there for General Specs and Tuning Tips open it and it's at the bottom of the list

i jetted it to the team green recommendation when i got it home and it wasn't running right. still didn't run right. I took it to the shop and they put a new plug in and dropped the needle all the way down and leaned one of the jets down, can't remeber which. I think he went from a 55 or whatever to a 48. i have it written down. i'll look tomorrow.
-
how is it not running right? Whats it doing to make you believe its all in the carb?
-
Not positive it's the jetting but thats the easiest place to start.acts like it's loading up. Not smooth at all. Sputters like crazy, surges bad when you let off. Won't even think about coming up in 4 or 5th gear and only decent in 3rd. Barely feels faster/stronger than my 99 cr 250. gonna wear the gopro next time I ride it and post the vid so y'all can hear it.
-
I'm no expert that's for sure.
Most of these kinds of diagnosis start with an old timer asking what your numbers are:
A compression test and a leak down test.
Then the conversation has some more ideas and then it gets to:
One of the best ways to mod the bike is go through the engine and freshen it up so you have a good baseline or
foundation to build on. Or That's the only way You know what you've got in the engine
Do you need to keep the bike running 'til off season or are you ok with going through the bike now?
The bottom line with most guys is how to finance the project and a plan to work it out.
You already are on top of diagnosis, gonna wear the gopro next time I ride it
Man those cameras are cool and that is where the engine builder guys are gonna recognize something.
Think about it and the vids are probably 2nd best to the compression test and a leakdown.

yeah friar-tuck. I'm gonna do the vid when i get time. I talked to the mechanic yesterday and told him I thought it needed a leak down test and compression text. it's pretty hard to kick so we both think the compression is fine. I'm just gonna see what you guys have to say about the vid first and go from there.

My intake boot has alot of tiny cracks in the outside but when I took it off to check my reeds while rejetting the carb after I bought it, there were no cracks at all on the inside of the boot. so It shouldn't be getting any air leaks there.
