Are they any good, and do I need a filter cage to install... im asking because I dont have a cage to wrap a normal filter on and the cage from kawi is=$40
filter=30 so $70 for a normal setup for me... or I can pay $40 for the K&N off ebay, is it worth it? I just dont want dirt getting in to the motor and effin it all up, Im using a thick sheet of material with filter oil all over it right now lol atleast it breathes good and still hauls ass :-D

I run K&N on everything. If you are going to run in high dust conditions run an outerwear or filterskin. They last forever too. You do not need a cage. Need to be installed properly with K&N grease on the mating surface to insure proper sealing.

Me and a few fellow desert racers have had bad luck with K&N. One of my buddies used to race baja for team Honda.

do you think you could elaborate on this bad luck? what year did yall do baja, maybe k&n stepped up their product since then.

For some reason, none of the desert racing teams I've seen use K&N air filters. In fact, in all of the Team Green KX 500s I've seen, they have the stock air filter, unless the rider was sponsored by another filter company. My Team Green bike had the stock filter on it when I bought it. Desert races are very dusty, and I've never had a problem running the oem filter, of course being properly cleaned and oiled.
I have seen V8s run on the dynomometer actually lose power from going from the stock paper element filter to the million mile K&N. They also can play havoc on MAF sensors and other sensitive equipment, so I have always stayed away from them.
