Title: Shifting Problems
Post by: NastyNick on July 01, 2004, 04:17:16 AM
Recently my '93 K5 has developed a problem that I hope someone can help me out with.  I was out practicing starts with my kid at our local track and I noticed when the engine is pinned in second gear, it won't shift into 3rd.  Going from 2nd to 3rd is the only place I notice this at and only when the throttle is wfo.  Under "normal" conditions it shifts just fine into and out of 3rd (or any other gear).

Any ideas??

Thanks!

shift fork is the best guess could be that crap has gotten in the groove of the shift drum so the fork won't slide right.

Wouldn't that mean that I would not be able to shift into 3rd at all?

Not really.  If you have ever been into the tranny, you will notice that the fork is moved back and forth by a shift hub that has a squigly trough cut into the side.  A distortion of other defect in the shift fork can cause a bind as the end of the fork tries to move through the trough in the shifting hub.  Only way to know for sure is to split the cases.
