One of my buddies has a speedometer on his bike so of course we have to see how fast we can go. My 99 KX 500 is stock with the exception of the 49 tooth rear sprocket. We took off and I pulled away from them for a long ways. I topped out and he caught up to me. 87 MPH was the best I could do. Does that sound about like what I should be getting?
-
yup, with a 49t. You might be a little lean in the top and it won't open up all the way.

Yup, that's about right. I pulled 85 mph with my K500 on an ideal logging road via GPS.

I hit 88 on my 88 K5 with a ICO odo. Cant remember the gearing though.

whats the top speed with stock gearing? 14/45 is stock correct?

Kx500 is pre programed option

correct me if im wrong but it says with 14/45 gearing (Top speed per gear for 49 sprocket combinations in at M.P.RPM in Custom setup:? the top speed is at 107.7

14/47 is stock .

O okay thanks for the info...so im geared for more top end

If you could spin her up to 8500 rpm under the load of 5th gear... Yes... But doubtful it will if it's stock. Your looking more in the 97mph range if I had to guess

I have 15/45 gearing and have ran my bike out on El Mirage Dry Lake with some friends with 650 four strokers (that have speedometers) and I can walk away pretty good from my buddies bike that runs just under 100 mph. This is with mild porting, fmf desert pipe, stock (brand new) reeds, and spot on jetting. I only did this one time when first bought my 500 just to test it out and to see if the wheels/tires were balanced, but I didn't buy this thing to run out where a road bike can!
-
yea mine is mostly stock and probably wont see 8500rpm i was just wanting to make sure i was understanding the chart lol...mine has pro circuit exhaust, fresh bottom to top rebuild, bored .30 over, that about all i know for real air filter looks stock and im not sure on the reeds i dont see any writing on the outside like boyesen and v force normally would so im guessing they are prolly stock

Odd, I tried 15/45 gearing out on the ice, same basic mods (less porting) and my engine would not pull this gearing on top end. My speeds and rpms flattend out at about the same 85 mph mark.

Polar-Bus, doesn't your bike have a moose reed spacer (and a flywheel weight, which only testing could determine how this could affect top speed)? Although some claim reed spacers make more low end to mid range power, don't they hurt power on the top end? Have you tried new stock reeds and removing the spacer (and of course, rejet the bike for these new changes) to see if this improves/hurts top end? Do you have perfect compression?
When the KX500 was being raced by Team Green that last few years (they were still desert raced in 2005), Varner Motorsports built the engines. So, I'm not sure how many internal modifications were made to my motor, but I find it very interesting that Team Green, which had the knowledge and the resources to extensively test the KX500, refrained from installing reed spacers and trick reeds.
Here's an example I like to think about when it comes to aftermarket parts:
Look at the exhaust on Destry Abbott's 2004 KX500. It's interesting that it doesn't have a FMF silencer/spark arrestor on it, yet he was sponsored by FMF and he had a FMF Gnarly desert pipe. He has the stock silencer trimmed by 3 inches and a sparky welded on the end. Team Green claimed no power loss with this set up, and a scientific analysis (maybe a dynomometer) was probably performed to reach this determination. My FMF silencer (Unfortunately, Team Green didn't have this set up on the Brian Brown bike I bought) looks pretty restrictive with bend in it and turbine in the exhaust path, but I have no way of testing the power of one silencer to the next. All I know was on race day, this is what the factory team had on Destry's bike, so I'm inclined to take advantage of their research, and follow their recipe.

Mine would pull that gearing... in STOCK form, with questionable Reeds. and a gnarly woods...
In a DEEP sand wash, it would top that gearing out without hastle...
Now. that its modified.. and the overdrive 5th (which is taller than that gearing still).. it pulls it around no problem..
-
I was told by the builder of my motor that my flywheel was also lightened
-
i run a 12/50 on my kx5 and it has no top speed think i got it to 95km thats in woods trails thats what the gps said but man does it have alot of low end power today for some reason gps said i got up to 142 km
-
142 Km/hour = 88.23 miles/hour.
That's about right.
Get it on a hard flat surface, pin it in 5th until the head starts to shake, loosen your grip and let the front end walk around a bit, and I'll bet you can get 90 out of it :-)
-
every thing is stock on my bike but the 12/50 sprockets how can i get some more power out of it for cheap i just did new piston re plated the cylinder but what else can i do for fairly cheap . i am lookin for more grunt inthe bogg holes , i ride alot of mudd boggs and 1st and 2nd good just too short and 3rd and 4th it takes a min to power up and light em up , so what can i do for more quicker bottom end/power quicker

I don't know what you are looking for, with 12/50 gearing 1st and 2nd are basically useless because you have extremly high gearing. What do you mean by " more grunt in the bog holes" ? A bone stock KX500 has about 58 hp, that should be MORE than adequate to charge any mud hole..

I was curious about why my bike wouldn't pull this gearing claim. I went and dug out my "speed" gearing sprockets and I posted incorrect info. The optional gearing I tried was 15/39 . So this gearing is far more taxing on the engines torque. This explains why my engine was flat pulling on top end.
Sorry for the senior brain fade moment..... i'm getting too old for this $hit... :? LOL

In about 1992 Dirt Rider did an article on the baja prep'd KX500. Balanced motor but they said the port work was minimal, factory team yeah right, but the speed they quoted stuck with me as 120mph. Dont remember the gearing, but does this sound right to anyone else. It'd have had to be some long old gears & one stout motor to pull it

132 mph, Won't see that unless you have an OD 5th gear. It seems like the Baja 500s were also running KLR 650 4th and 5th gears for more top end. That's what Ty Davis said anyway.

Thats great info. Thats part of Y I ditched the cr5 they run out of legs. Even more up top  Now to find a klr650 tranny

17/33 T sprockets too.

There was a video out with some helicopter crew chasing LR at a top speed of 118mph. Squeeze in a few more mph's on tarmac.

This link is to a a great video on youtube. Back in 93 there was a tv show called the extremnists......This is an episode that focuses on motorcycles. They have a young Colin Edwards for roadracing and Larry Roeseler for off road. Lots of good clips of larry and ty davis down in baja, adelanto and in their backyard of hesperia ca. You can view the first few min for free but have to purchase the whole episode for like 3.99. Very worth it. Larry speaking of his baja experiences and some good kx500 shots. check it out. This is the time and era that I was mostly around them all. I was actually present for some of the clips.
