Title: Fuel petcock very hard to turn
Post by: bturton on June 23, 2011, 12:07:35 PM
Hey fellow power mongers....
Just a quick question. Is there a better fuel valve to use as a replacement for this pliers needing POS part?
I have taken it apart and tried to smooth out the plastic valve with no luck.

PS. I have been lurking here for a while now, both while looking for a 5hundie and now that I have one, looking at ways to maintain and improve "The Monster!"

I will post up in the New Members section when I have some pictures to post.

Thanks all....

Brad

Didn't really want to replace with a stocker.....
Now I have a few options when I stop into the bike shop.

Take your Dremel Tool and cut off 2 coils of the spring inside the petcock. This will lessen the preload on the nylon cone.

Smear a tiny bit of antisieze on the nylon packing, and the actuall steel valve. Grease the oring and your valve should rotate reasonably smooth. My 500's valve works nice and smooth, but my old '97 KX250 was very stiff. Some are KX's work smooth some don't.

When I got my 2004 500, my petcock was pretty much froze up. I too needs pliers to open it. I ordered a OEM part off Kawasakipartswharehouse.com I think it was like $24.00. New one works like a dream.
