I was riding this weekend and I broke my shifter. I did not break the shifter itself, I twisted the splined part of the shaft completley off. The splined end of the shaft is still clamped in the shifter arm.
I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else. I noticed that the parts that break often on the KX500 are inexpensive to replace and this part is only $32.00 from the dealer.

I had this happen on a smaller machine before I added the shifter clamp bolt to the race prep sheet. Now, no problems. Also, the shaft splines could be in rough shape as well, so check them out before putting your new shifter in place. The shaft is a cinch to get out from the clutch side if needed.
Good luck.

I had an issue with one of my Yamaha's slipping all the time. I welded it...never slipped again but eventually broke off.
