Title: Silencer modification
Post by: sniper1 on May 08, 2011, 01:16:53 PM
I searched through hundreds of threads but couldn't find this subject so if it's already been discussed sorry about that.

I'm sure others on here don't care for the way the silencer sticks out almost to the rear fender :) and it's straight instead of following the lines like a 250 but is there a way to make it so the silencer just barely sticks out past the side plate?

I don't know if moving the bracket on the silencer or cutting part of the pipe on the silencer so it's a lot shorter but doesn't hurt the performance of the silencer I think it would look a ton better more up to date or maybe fmf or pro circuit could modify the silencers so they barely stick out.

Ok good news I found a solid welder that is going to cut my 304 silencer off so that it sticks out about 1/2" past the number plate and he's putting thicker metal on the inside so I can have allen heads (countersunk) so I can repack the silencer and the allen screws will sit flush it should make the back of the bike look a little better more modern and less prone to destruction in the case of a crash, I will get pics up when it's all done.

I have a Spes silencer that is cut down, maybe 3" off.  And it doesnt hinder performance at all.

I was wondering about the performance aspect of cutting one down and I found a welder that is cutting it down and welding metal on the inside of the silencer so he can drill and tap it with the same type allen head bolts that are used on the back end of the silencer so I can use it over and over again repacking at will so it should be done tomorrow I'll post pics if it happens.

My silencer just came back from the welder and he put screws in the front so I can repack it when the time comes, he repacked this one with the packing I brought over to him and this silencer sticks out about 2" past the number plate it's going to look good on there.

looks similar to my spes, except i didnt have anything welded to it.  just used rivets for the end cap.  you may be suprised as this silencer may work a little better for some applications.

Sniper,
The silencer looks nice! A general rule, the shorter yields more bottom, the longer yields more up top (with added heat).

Thanks guys and I was fortunate to see a welder for hire sign in front of this guys house and he's one of those guys that has to do it right so he really put a lot into doing it right for a grand total of $30 which is awesome for a silencer that will look better due to it's length and will be harder to damage if it flips over backwards then you have the performance that was mentioned and I'm ready to roll.

Thanks :) I can't wait to get her mounted and take it for a spin not to mention a few pics.

Roost daddy I wanted screws in both ends so I could repack it anytime it needed it and hopefully I can get years of use out of it due to that.

It does look a lot like a works silencer :) I'm sure glad the welder knew what he was doing because the night before I kept having nightmares of booger welds and the wrong length lol.

I might break out the dewalt cordless and give it a nice even polished look :)

I haven't put it on yet but will in the next day or two and give you the most honest review of how it sounds that I can along with pics. I have to take my cycle endorsement test so I have the forest approved silencer on it for now until the test is done just in case it's loud.

I don't have a video recorder :( and my cell phone is a pay by the minute throw away type so it doesn't have a recorder either. My computer has a built in camera maybe that would work?

I will make a video of it once mounted and I'm waiting for crush washers and the pipe brackets to finish the job and I have it tore down right now putting all the parts on the bike but of course the pipe mounts are oem and take forever to get hell maybe I'll get a video recorder while I'm waiting :)

Well it's done and I'm much happier with the new look as you can see the silencer goes on forever stock

This is the shortened silencer much better and a video with sound will come after the silicone sets up

Well 89kaw things weren't always the way they are now and there was a time when I could barely afford gas in my bike let alone aftermarket parts but a good military career and decent job combined with a wife that buys a lot of crap which makes it ok for me to buy a lot of crap :)

The key is trade off value with the wife she buys some goofy girl crap for $20 and I buy a $100 part lol and she never seems to notice even though college educated has her BA in psychology cumme summe laude or maybe she is just using psychology on me and plans on spending a fortune on something I'm not sure :)

I'm 43 years old and fairly comfortable with everything paid off from cars to house and property so it makes it easier to buy crap but I was thrifty when I was younger so I could have everything paid off at this age. The wife picked the camera out and it looks like a dandy I should have that video with sound up tomorrow my question is how do I make it so you can see it and hear it?

my question is how do I make it so you can see it and hear it?

just press record on the video function then BAM its recording video and sound.
is that the answer you wanted?

LOL yeah that should be about it but turns out the battery is flat out dead on this recorder :( but the good news is that my wife took a nice short video on her ipad so if you shoot me your email I can send you the file unless there is a better way of putting it on this forum and that's the trouble I was speaking of I haven't ever posted a video clip so if you pm me your email I can send it in a file (wife figured that part out) but she's the smart one out of us :)

I don't think it's any louder than my forest approved long ugly silencer and I ordered new packing for this shorty that is supposed to be real good stuff (made in usa) it's made right here in the good old usa too so I'd rather buy made in usa than the foreign stuff when possible sometimes you just can't avoid foreign stuff it's not made here like our bikes lol.

Get the pillow it's much easier to work with and has trim spots so you can trim it without messing it up and I ordered the 19" so I will have plenty of material to pack it tight can't wait to repack the silencer with this stuff and I really don't think it's louder with the shorty and turns out the welder that did the silencer just put the old used packing back in it so the stuff is in bad shape and I reckon it will be even quieter with the new stuff.

you wont be able to send a large file through email . you can post the video through photobucket or youtube.

The clip is about 1 minute and my wife emailed it to me from her ipad let me know if it works, I don't have a youtube account or any other file sharing type account but will get one if the email doesn't work.

Thanks for posting the video up and I don't think it's any louder than the forestry approved silencer that I had on it when I first got it and I'll make another video with new packing in the shorty to compare but it won't be here until next week.

I'm thinking of building a track in the way back yard what kind of track do you think I could make back here? my place sits on 3.5 acres that leads to the back 48 acres.

http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/554375730iHUUMy

This is from the hunting shed 20' in the air looking at about 14 acres of the back property.

This is our one lane dirt road and out where I live that's all we have is miles and miles of dirt roads and that is why I wanted a street legal k5 because we don't have local police or even any sheriffs that patrol out here but the state boys do come out here especially when someone calls and it's over $200 for riding on the road without a license my buddy on a CR500 found out.

i didnt like the silencer hanging down and sticking out.i got a fmf universial kit, notched the subframe a little to clear silencer and mount the strap clamp to the subframe.the silencer has an upswept look to match angle of pipe.

when you cut your silencer did you cut off the us forstery approved stamp in it?when i go to so cal they check for it and take a stick and poke inside ckecking for spark arestor along with a decible test, and of course your "green" sticker ohv registration.

Sorry for the long response time but I have been unable to access this site until just now but I have 2 silencers for it the one that I modifed is a 304 and I have a us forestry approved just like yours only I like yours better due to the angle which is my next mission to make the 304 shorty go up on a angle like that.

I just repacked my 304 shorty with this stuff that is pretty amazing to be honest and they said they are going to make a 500 kit for us that will fit our stock silencers and the aftermarket units for our bikes which I thought was d**ned nice of them to look out for customers like that.

I was yelling through my 304 before opening it up and repacking and my voice seemed unaffected then I repacked it and yelled through it and my voice just disappeared it's just amazing to me that anything would absorb sound like that and I'll make a video with the 304 shorty and new packing as soon as walmart gets me my new battery they ordered because the wife is gone with her ipad so no vid with sound but the bike passed a decible test at 2500-3000 rpm it came in at 90 decibles which is 4 less than the park asked for.

I will get a video of the sound as soon asap and you will be amazed at how deep the sound is coming from this 8" silencer a nice deep pop and growl I couldn't be happier with the sound.

Made in USA this should matter even if the product was equal to other brands.
