Title: Digitron which one and why?
Post by: Motorrad on April 20, 2011, 08:33:44 PM
Okay... going to bite the bullet and buy a Digitron... Yea yea I know... You can find where I have said in the past on here, I dont see a need for them... But Figure Ill move it around to a few other bikes in the barn to get them set up better...

BUT it will LIVE on the Kx500...

So here is the deal.

Dont want a HUGE honking thing on the bars...

1. I cant find dimentions of them.. (single display, dual display, etc)  have a link to this?

2. 50 series vs 30 vs 40?

3. I NEED EGT and CHT... tach would be nice to have also...

4. I want to be able to download to a laptop and review.. (

5. Im leaning tward the large single display, probly would just leave it in EGT mode all the time with a warning light for CHT...

They show a picture of the 50 series in a single display, but no price listing etc.... I may just have to call them...

Motorad

The Digatron is a fantastic product! I would agree that the four window display gets a bit big on the bars. 2, 3, or four windows...the displays are very easy to read in a tuck, but there are also programmable 'info/warning' lights on most of the units.

The product was orginally designed for kart use and they have no problem dealing with the vibration of the 2s motor. It is important to run the leads seperated from the K5's ignition wires.

The display and sensors have proven their durability, but the wires are scary thin and need to be protected. The conectors have a spring lock that works well, but needs to be protected from the elements.... consider the kart track are pretty clean and dry places.

One thing I might consider is using the digatron to set your baseline and then taking full advantage of the protection that the toolbox offers. I don't think I have ever seen a set of EGT/CHT gauges that could survive a KX5 loop.

If you sort out where you want to mount stuff, Digatron will cut your wires to fit!

The single display is a good idea, but the four channel display is scream'n cool and the graphes don't lie! I would really consider one of the bigger units and just admit it is a tuning tool. At the very least, figure out a way to protect the plugs on the back of the unit.

WOW good reply mark. thanks!

I was thinking of mounting it where my current speedo is.. (reason speed would be nice)

Possibly spending some time on the mill and making a case for it kind of like the one my speedo is in..

It would be quick remove, so If I was running a race, I could take it off after some "tuning" in the morning... otherwise Id feel safe running it Id think..

Im not worried about cables.. I have access to the clear shrink tube they use to coat the outside of steel braided lines... So that would be a must...

So the 30 series doesnt do datalogging? is this a correct statment? (even though it says it supports chart software??)

Motorrad,
I have the 54 Series (4 Display) mounted on the K5. Reason for this model is I want to use this on my other bikes as you mentioned & with this model you can view mutiple EGTs, CHTs (My RZ will be next in line for the Digatron). As Mark stated it is a great tuning tool & would not use during a "Desert Race" as it is, but if you were to make a case I think it would be okay & it can also give you MPH if needed.
As mentioned on another topic the gauge really helped me determine that something was not right on my motor which lead me to investigate the problem & without it, would have taken alot longer without it and sure more dollars wasted. I was also able to tell at what RPM the "Butt Dyno" said the motor was making & not making power, & the data downloaded to the computer confirmed what I felt. The software for the Data is amazing to look at and determine if your rich or lean, what rpm, etc.
The folks at Digatron are great to work with & Betty (owners daughter) really knows her stuff & will listen to your questions & explain how their system works & offer even more means to accomodate. Give her a call & tell her the "OldGuy" whose wife bought the gauge for him said she knows it all!

TRUE I Am very old dog in my ways..

but I am also a tech nerd.. (benifit of growing up in my generation)

Talked to betty at digatron.. you were right doug. that lady knows her stuff!!

She set me straight, that the single display wont do what I want to do..

so I ended up with this (from this vendor also) as they were great to deal with on the phone, actually took the part off the shelf for me, to measure stuff. etc...   and their price is TONS lower than anyone else..

Oops wrong button *Motorrad*

Id love to have the 4 display one.. But I know I wouldnt use it as much because of its size....

Can some of you snap a pic of your EGT mount location?

Also Doug told me how far from the piston face to mount the EGT probe... But since I was running a asbestos removal jobsite, (air monitering, etc etc) I of course forgot what number he told me.

Wow that probe is Huge...   (looks exactly like one I have sitting here on my shelf that is a ULTRA FAST react one). I use on my BBQ smoker, (hooked to a PID computerised temp controller)

Now I just need to get up the guts to drill and weld on a Zip-ty pipe that I got the last one of...

(looks exactly like one I have sitting here on my shelf that is a ULTRA FAST react one).

I specifically chose the Digatron product because their response time is fast enough for tuning purposes. A lot of the 2s stuff available is really designed for use as a 'dummy' light. As in, "Hey guy, the egt on your ultralight engine just started climbing....better look for a field!"

That is the conclusion I came to from looking at all of them also..

I downloaded their software last night, Looks like it will be accurate enough to show me how bad of a rider I am (show all my missed shifts, etc)

here you go with the deto counter. the black means it's detonation. You can hook this up to your data logger input.

Havnt touched anything above 1/2 yet. (break in ya know)

Perhapse I am just being perrinoid.. My BIG 640CC KTM single normaly runs in the 170's (no matter what)..  fans kick on at 185..  and never.. I MEAN NEVER goes above 190...
(And I am talking about idling through a sand wash, (DEEP). for 2 hours, in first gear, in 109F weather..  I thought I was going to die...)
