Title: What Oil to use to run in a KX500 that has a new piston?
Post by: bigbore on March 25, 2011, 12:45:30 AM
Hi All,

I will be running in my 1988 kx500 next week as soon as i receive my head back in the post (its off getting a de-comp mod at present).

I have fitted a new wiseco piston kit, standard bore etc.

I need to know what the best oil is to use to run the bike in? Ive heard different stories in favor of both; semi-synthetic and fully-synthetic.

Some say that semi is better as it helps the piston seat better with the barrel?

Any info or advise welcome.

Thanks.  :-D

I make sure I give all surfaces and bearings a good coating of the regular oil I run [semi-syn] and then add a little extra oil to the first tank-ful of fuel like 32/1 , I normally run 50/1.CBX

Not doubting what works for you but extra pre-mix causes extra heat.

I normally run Maxima Super-M mixed 50:1 with 93 octane gasoline.  I put a new top end in my bike last summer and just made sure to put a coating of my premix on the piston, bearings and such.  Ran the same fuel/oil mix as always just took it easy until I got several heat and cooling cycles on it.  She runs like a champ.
