Title: 1999 KX 500. Should I get it?
Post by: KTMMDG on March 20, 2011, 01:57:31 PM
Hey, let me first say I'm 5'7 132lbs I have been Riding Dirt bikes & off-road vehicles in general for the last 8 years I'm currently on a Yamaha YZ250 (2-stroke) and I would like to get a Bigger (2-stroke) Bike. I've come across this 1999 KX 500 I have not seen it in person yet but from what the seller has told me and the pictures it's in good Condition. I Like it so far but my Question is- is it hard finding parts for it?. are there any major defects in the 99 model?. are there any common problems associated with it in general?. any input and help would be greatly Appreciated thanks.

Looks like a nice find to me.  Has a lot of good stuff on it too - ZipTy tank and pipe and an Ohlins shock just to name a few.

looks pretty nice for  99....its a big 2stroke alright...but beware its a whole different animal, dont be mistaken by comparing it any 250 built or not
Im 5'10" 200lbs and consider myself fairly physicaly fit.  you say your 5'7 and 130s....hang on bud !! cause even at 200lbs the K5 can easily throw me like a PBR bull...
woohoo !! go for it
ps - that bike has some nice goodies on it too

Thanks everybody I bought it and I'm on my way home now it has a lot of neat stuff on it once I'm home I'll get another picture and a list of things on it up here.

I have a few questions about it -
what's the best spark plug to run in it?
What mix ratio does she take?
What octane should I be at?

PS- I'm in the high desert 5,000ft +

Great bike dude. I just bought a 2000 about 6 months ago and love it like its was one of my 2 kids. The guys on this site will help you and give you the best info that you can find. The parts for my 2000 are easy to find, but I would say check out ebay before you buy anything. I bought a kick start for $120 and found it on Ebay for $60 and still bought it. as for how the bike run, im alittle bigger than you and I hang on for life but to me its the best feeling in the world. Well wecome to the best site that man can make and ride it like you stole it!!!!

Every time I think of light racers on powerful bikes Larry Roeseler comes to mind.

From 1988 through 1996 the KX500 won the Baja 1000.  Team Green member Larry Roeseler road the KX500 for six of those years. He was about 5?9? and 150 lbs. and he could throw the bike around like it was nothing. I would see him on the KX500 all the time when I was racing as a kid. He was one of Danny Hamel?s teammates for while.
