Well, I figured you guys on here are thoroughly sick of having threads started on age old info that is already in a millon places on the forum. But I went through all of it and did not find any representation of what the bolt is supposed to look like. THIS is how to make a correct length kips bolt for your bike. The toughest part is finding a bolt to mod., I got mine on ebay!
AS FOLLOWS:

I hope this clears things up on how to make one. Info on install/setup is on another thread, search function.
-
Great Job! delphipro5
When I first started looking at this site I had no idea what the mod was or what it was suppose to do.
After reading several postings I finally figured out what it did :-D
-
whats a kips bolt mod supposed to do?
-
you forgot to say why a guy would what to do this mod.
Here are 2 bolt mod bolt that i'm sure the owner would sell since they are big.
-
Hey kaw rider.
Are you still making a batch of the bolts?
I still need two if you are :-D

Hah... I just PM'ed him too..
-
whats a kips bolt mod supposed to do?
It keeps the KIPS valves from over rotating closed. Can make it a little tougher to kick, but not bad. It does make the power come on sooner it seems.
Don't forget to reset the governor arm!!!
-
What years/models does this apply to?
-
:? I simply posted a drawing for those who want to make them. ALL the rest you can find by looking at the endless amount of chat on this subject. I did not expect this to turn into a 3 page thread! Just was expecting someone to correct me on my measurements. But your probably talking thousandths of a mm so I think that the demensions are correct. Thanks for the pic kaw, thats the first phisical representation I have seen of what these are supposed to look like. I am thinking of making a run of these myself with low socket cap bolts. It's gonna be a while so don't ask me for one yet!
-
I believe that you need to set the govener arm up with the stock kips bolt and then install the new bolt for it to work properly.
-
In the for sale section of the forum Kaw Rider has the steath KIPS bolt for sale $39 bucks. It is exactly what I was going to make a run of. Low socket cap type bolt and everything! Duh, I can't beleive it took me this long to find that here!! I guess if you need ANYTHING ask him, he will prob. have it!
AND since it already made it's way onto this thread, anyone want to chime in on the how's of setting the gov. arm to make this mod work correctly?
I believe that you need to set the govener arm up with the stock kips bolt and then install the new bolt for it to work properly.
Is that right?
I promise, I won't post on this subject again. :-P
-
You take out the stock KIPS bolt. Install the new one. Remove the governer arm cover. Loosen the 10mm nut on the arm to let the KIPS valve reset on the new bolt. Then retighten the governer arm not and put the cover back on.
-
you what some pressue on the linkage
-
No pressure on the linkage.
you what some pressue on the linkage
-
I got the KIPS bolt mod from kaw rider yesterday, and now I'm getting ready to install. By reading this post, there seems to be a difference in opinion on whether or not there should be pressure on the linkage. I've always just let the KIPS valve rest against the bolt and then tighten governor arm nut, but I've never done any mods to KIPS before. Since this is not a stock part, I want to set this up correctly. Seems like kaw rider has done his homework with this mod, so when he said put some pressure on the linkage, this got my attention. How much tension should be applied. Also, I'm assuming the stock metal washer/gasket is should be used correct?
-
Yes, use the stock washer. On the tension thing I am not sure. Since we are buying these modded bolts from KAW then I would go with what he says(here we go with the accountability thing again!).- "You want some pressure on the linkage."- What I think he means by that is you just don't want it loose as a goose.
**These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any type of engine disease.**
There, that sould take care of it for me and Kaw. If anyone reads this then blows up thier engine. :-D :-D
-
I don't what to go into a deep story on why you what little pressue on the wheel.
I would try neutral and little pressue and see what you like.
-
I'm going to make an educated guess and go with kaw rider's suggestion of "a little pressure". I'm going to race this bike in Hare & Hounds and European Scrambles, so this means dead engine start. I looks like the purpose of the KIPS over rotation was to bleed off some compression. If I notice that it's harder to kick over after the KIPS bolt mod, I will have to do the compression release mod! I love this site.
When I decided to race the KX500, I never realized that I would come across modifications that seem to be good advancements without sacrificing reliability. I watched my old man desert race KX250s for years and it was amazing how competitive he was with a stock motor, and a really well prepared machine with a lot of attention to detail. He never had a DNF, wish I could say the same! Of course, being a young gearhead, he would laugh at me messing with reeds, jets, pipes, etc. to squeeze more power out of my bikes, and he used to say, "just hold it open for a few more seconds than a competitor with all of that high performance BS, and it won't matter. A stock machine in good tune is always more reliable!" Well, that's desert racing, but the gearhead in me still wants to see how much power can be made with any motor I own.
-
Going to revisit this. Looking to make a batch. Any interest? I can do an anodized hex head plug or look at doing the stealth allen head like stock. Would not be made to order, but have them packaged on the shelf ready to ship. $20 delivered is what it looks like I can do them for to get my money back make maybe $5 fro my time. I really like this mod and for the guy getting into K5's or are neck deep in them is a good place to start. Thoughts?

If he wants a titanium one. I want a Waspaloy one. just to be differant.
sorry. enough hijacking. Im done. :-P
-
oh. and as for setting up the kips with a modded bolt.
I now set them up as follows.
Set arm at neutral pressure with STOCK BOLT. tighten down.
remove stock bolt. install modded bolt. so the kips are preloaded. and will open at same RPM as stock.
Done.

If it is an option, why not? 8-)

We ride our bikes in the dirt as well.... we just wash ours :-P

I've never seen a pic of your bike dirty even in your excursion pics its clean lol

A option if servicing top end,may also need to remove the first couple of treads on bolt,
-
So you want to see dirty pics of my bike?
This is after a 3 day ride.
If you ride it fast the dirt doesn't stick very well..

That's what I'm talking about. It's still clean lol. No matter where I ride here the bike gets coated in mud.
-
There is the problem... I ride in dry mud.

Dave means instead of making a longer bolt, cutting a bit from the cylinder will have the same effect.
Some nice pics there Dave when clicking further.

Ahhh. I thought he meant it made servicing the top end easier. And couldn't think of how.
I'm in the same page now.
Would be easy as pie to plunge cut that on the mill when you had the top end off.
-
I modified my oem bolt a couple years ago in a few minutes...but I know...it's a bling factor, to have a nice anodized or titanium bolt :-D
some day I'll get a phone that takes pics worth a f**k :|

Put me down for 1 anodized hex head bolt. Choice of anodized colors perhaps?

What color? Hex head or hex drive?

Any color but black really. Hex drive.
-
not trying to hurt anyones sales but i actually made one from a automotive drain plug from auto zone for only 3.99 and a little time on a bench grinder to shorten it up.
-
wonder if this could help my bike rev up smoother(especially on higher rpm) how can i tell if the valves are over closing? or should i just get a modded bolt and be safe :-P
-
Well all 89+ k5 overrotate, because it's done for decompression.
A moded bolt corrects this so te kips is closed at low rpm.

My new sexy stealth TITANIUM kips bolt mod...
dang where'd you get that! i was going to get one made up. but getting one off broached was going to cost to much. thought about just putting an 8mm hex head on it but that would make it look not as clean.
