Title: fitting wheels from a kxf.
Post by: tunster on January 08, 2011, 10:13:18 PM
Is it possible to fit a set of wheels from a kxf to k5? What would it involve? Is it a case of just changing the wheel bearings or could it be done by having a new spindle made? Would they be compatible with the original brake systems?

Anything is possible with enough time and money.
Just my humble opinion but I would sell the set you have and then buy what you need.
You could save yourself a bundle.  :|

I know the front wheels fit kx5 with the last fork change they did, but not sure of the year i think it is 97 on but the back wheel on the kxf has a bigger dia wheel spindle and not sure if changing the bearing to suit the kx5 spindle would it fit. Not sure how close the hubs are.

Warp 9 makes rear wheel spacer adapters  that allow you to use the KXF hubs on
the K5.  The rear rotors are a different diameter, the kxf are a little bigger but the bolt pattern is the same. The fronts are a direct  swap.

Just a thought, you never said what year of 450 or 500 you were wanting to swap.
KX500's use a 20MM rear axle.
The outside of bearing to the outside of the bearing is 130MM from 1989-2004
The front axle is 20MM from 1994-2004.
The outside of bearing to the outside of the bearing is 89.5MM.
I don't have a lot of info on the newer 450 and 250F but this is what I do have.
Front wheel bearings:
KAWASAKI KX250F 04-10 20MM
KAWASAKI KX450F 06-10 20MM
Rear wheel hub: 25MM bearing and the outside to outside of the bearings 133.5MM 04-06 KX250F and KX450F
Hope this helps

My 2001 K5 has Warp 9 KXF 450 wheels on it.  Warp 9 told me the only difference is the rotor and rear spacer adapters.  If I change the rear wheel spacers they will fit right on 450.

I thought I read on here a while back that: The rear disc was bigger in diameter and the bolt pattern was different on the kxf than the k5 and you had to either get the disc cut down or make a bracket to move the caliper?

I read that too, I will double check.  I have  a KX500 rotor I will compare to my Warp 9 hub.

the rear rotor is not only larger, but has 4 bolts holding it on where as the 500 has 6. The wheels will definately fit, you may have to make some custom spacers, no big deal if you have a friend with a lathe and as someone has said they make spacer kits. I would also think the front would use different spacers from the f to the 500, but again a little modifying and your golden.

On http://www.braking.com/it/home/home_redirect.php (http://www.braking.com/it/home/home_redirect.php) you can find
the sizepatern of diskbrake.

Looks that in 06 kawasaki changed disk patern.

I believe hub width hasn't changed over the years.

03 rear hub is different that 02 rear hub, wheels that would fit the 03 and later would use the larger rear rotor, so if you want to use hubs for an 03 or newer  on a 500 or a 02 or older 250 you would need to come up with a smaller rear disc or modify a newer brake caliber to fit your older bike.  the rotor is only something like 10mm larger so maybe there is enough clearance with the caliper to allow it to fit.

Ok, I finally got around to measuring my 07 KX250F Rear wheel.
Stamped: PFD - 0025 -
AXLE OD: 25MM -
Outside of BRG TO outside of BRG 133MM -
ROTOR OD 240MM -
ROTOR BOLT CIRCLE 4 ON 133MM -
SPROCKET BOLT CIRCLE 6 ON 150MM
FITS 07-08 KX250F KX450F Possibly others.

2000 K5
Stamped R-1237 -
AXLE OD 20MM -
Outside of BRG TO outside of BRG 130MM -
ROTOR OD 220MM -
ROTOR BOLT CIRCLE 6 ON 116MM -
SPROCKET BOLT CIRCLE 6 ON 150MM -
FITS 97-98 KX125 & 250, 97-04 KX500, in fact it fit's all the way back to 1989 but the hubs are a different casting.

So, the wheels will swap, the sprockets will interchange, BUT the rotors will not interchange.

I need to ask Warp 9 what rotor app they are using.  I will call them in the morning.

Do they make bearings that will fit in the KXF hub but still use the 20mm K5 axle? Or would you have to drill out the swing arm for the 5mm difference in axle diameter?

People have swapped bearings to make the kxf hubs work.  But, I think the spacer adapters from Warp 9 would be the easiest solution.  They also said they use a custom cut rotor for the wheel like the one I have.  It is $65 plus shipping.  So if you are going through the effort of swapping wheels Warp 9 is not a bad way to go since you get a complete wheel all ready to go with rotor and sprocket for about $360 a wheel.  But if you have a kxf wheel there are the bits to swap out too.
Good Luck

I've been looking into Warp9 wheels in my bored time and they seemed to be the only ones still willing to accommodate the older bikes like the K5. I've contacted a couple other companies I've found and started asking questions but when they found out it was going on a K5 they said they couldn't help and hung up on me. So I've just been trying to save my pennies and get the Warp9's with green hubs and black rims :D
