Title: Kx500 Lighting
Post by: whiteowlonfire on January 04, 2011, 05:20:44 AM
I bought an electrosport lighting coil and am in the process of connecting a 12 volt sealed battery to the system. My question is; Do I HAVE TO put a regulator in to charge the battery.  Can I just connect the positive stator wire to the battery terminal and have it charge?

I would say NO do not hook the wire to the battery.  I don't know for sure if you can or can't but I would call Electrosport.

You should need a regulator/rectifier. Will you be adding a compact battery like this?

Yeah I will get a compact battery, maybe even 2 or 3 and fit them somewhere on the bike since my lights are led and can handle 9-36 volts. I figure I can rig them up so that they charge in parallel @ 12 volts but have my lights wired in series to get 36v output. anyways, I was under the understanding that lighting coil output was dc?? My setup is just a magnet on the flywheel passing near a coil of wires(lighting stator) is that ac or dc? I don't get shocked by it, but the bro's at electrosport said it was ac.

I'm not the electrial engineer here but it should be ac,,,therefore the need for regulator/rectifier if you want to add a battery. I know nothing about going to 36v or why you would.

The power coming from your stator is AC.  If you run a battery will need a DC reg/rectifier.  The stator you bought is 35 watts max and not very reliable.  The compact battery that Baja designs sells that looks like 10 AA batteries will not keep up if you are drawing close to 35 watts.  The Turn Tech 2.5 is sweet. But, I am not sure 35 watts will keep it charged well.  I built a battery tray that fits in my airbox with my rectifier.  There is another option for power too.  I have posted loads of info on.  I have not had any problems and puts out 100 watts for lights.  So, It really depends on what you are doing and how much light you want.
Good Luck
Alex

I have 4 power D's and have yet to have any issues.
Then again I'm not big on riding in water so it's good to know.
Thanks!
