i recently swopped my rd legal 92 kdx 250 mint too for a 97 model kx 500 which apparently only needed a crank seal, wen i started stripping it i noticed the frame had snapped and been welded up where the seat joins with the fuel tank was wondering if this was common and could i get the engine and the rest to go on a 250 frame? it also wants a piston and crank and main bearings but surprisingly the barrel is like new have i been dooped or is the kx worth keepin? im new to the kawi scene as iv always been a honda lad up until the kdx which has always been 100% reliable but always wanted a 500 b it cr or kx so didnt really wana miss it

Sounds like a fair trade to me.

You could part it out and come out $$ ahead of what a 92 KDX250 is worth. Hang on to the K5 and fix it. You will not regret it.
-
yah, part it out. maybe i could finally seal the deal on getting a set of wheels from somebody.

This situation pi$$es me off so badly ! There is some dickhead out there smiling with a mint '92 KDX250....
I've never really heard of KX500 frames "snapping" where you describe under the seat (unless someone threw your bike off an 80 ft cliff ? ) :-D
I think your only solution is cut your losses, and part that bike out on EBay for whatever you can get. You have been schooled the hard way on lying sellers/traders.... Next time try to bring a 2 stroke educated friend as a second set of eyes in the future.. he may see trouble spots that you the excited potential buyer may not be seeing...

Buyer beware. Should have looked over the entire bike prior to the swap. I see this as the buyers fault, not the seller....

ye mate cos im about to strip his k5 in his garage to check his crank seals lol

If the seller was any kind of a man he would've told you everything that was wrong with the bike and then you could've made your decision.

Seriously, even though the frame is cracked, you still got a better deal, no matter how good your 92 kdx was you still came out on top of the deal. he now has a 92 kdx, karma, seriously that was the worst KDX kawasaki made you should be happy. now you have an opportunity to do a AF or SF 500, not sure where your located but I might be able to come up with a stock frame. or you could clean up the crack reweld it and gussett it it probably never break again

Ya most times a weld repair is 10 X stonger if done right.
Keep it. Strip it right down and rebuild it.

And the excuse for not seeing a broken/welded frame? Reason enough I would have passed on that *deal*.

I've welded up a couple spots on my 500 frame and re-enforced some shady looking spots from factory. I haven't had any issues at all. I've had some hard crashes and run hard through whooped out trails. As long as the weld looks solid I wouldn't worry about it. Don't think that just cuz a weld is pretty that it is solid. I've had the prettiest welds break and some of the ugliest hold forever. It's all about how well the weld penetrated the steel.
Glad you kept it. They are very fun and dependable. I completely rebuilt mine (all factory specs) and it starts every time and runs excellent. It's also fun to pull away from the punks on the new 4 stroke thumpers.
