Okay, I was just wondering if there is any bike that is faster then the kx500...like I couldnt even imagine a faster bike...my bike just keeps going and going and the torque is tremendous, so I dont see how a bike could be any faster...I havent even really opened my bike up in 5th gear yet...no fields long enough lol I guess there could be a bike that has more top end power...and it makes me sad that they are thinking about stop making the 2 stroke 500cc beast...what a shame..what are they thinking!

Sad to say, but I think a XR650 might take a KX500 on a lake bed. Not sure on it though. With mods, a KTM 525 EXC can get pretty close to a KX500.

For the price, not much beats the K5, but if price is no object, give one of these a try: http://www.atkusa.com/bikes/2004Models/700Itimidator.asp

JFC!!! I gripe about kicking over the 500. I don't even want to imagine trying to start that beast.
-
yea lol thats a beast...
-
I imagine the kickback on that bike would take your leg clean off!!!
All kidding aside, I remember reading a review of this bike somewhere and it rec'd good marks.
-
700cc with a left side kicker? Not for me! I do like how they allow you to customize the bike at the time of purchase. I admire ATK for this forward thinking. I think they are running Maico engines now instead of the Rotax.

the kick back on my 500 is deadly, i tore 4 pairs of boots atleast and like 10 pairs of paints kicking it..lol I really need to buy some racing boots, Hell i ride in sneakers sometime!
-
Yeah, I hear ya! I given up using tennis shoes. Usually my shins are so beat up by the time I'm done riding I can't walk.
-
Tennis shoes are not the safest thing,if its money thats an issue at least get some kind of riding boots.Oneal elements are $89.00 or Fox Trackers for $130.00,its best to buy the higher priced boots but these are safer than tennis shoes and only around a $100.00 or so.

Yup, my brother used to wear his old army boots to ride, thinking he had plenty of protection. Once he healed from the surgery to fix the four broken bones in the top of his foot when his toe clipped a rock and wrapped his foot around the footpet  , he purchased an inexpensive pair of riding boots. Cheaper than the insurance deductible...

I totally agree. Tennis shoes didn't cut it so I've moved on to thicker soled shoes. The problem with riding boot is that they are not design for people with thick (fat) calves. I never found a boot that I could wear comfortably. Now if they designed a boot that didn't come up so far then it wouldn't be a problem. The worse accident I've had in regards to my feet was when I was riding thru ditch at about 30mph and hooked a culvert with my right foot. d**n near ripped my leg off. That was probably 15-20 years ago and I still have problems with that hip. I do understand the risk to not protecting your feet and ankles but is there a shorter boot available.
-
You need a pair of Gaerne RX-2's,Bob's cycle supply has them for $159.99 and they will fit the BIGGEST calves around,so try a pair before you pay a lot more for a plaster boot.
-
Heck the worst foot injury I had wasn't near that bad. I was practicing for a two day ISDE qualifier in the trees, and got a little too close to a big stump on the rear brake side. Hit the stump with my peg, ripped the peg clean of the frame, weld and all, leaving a big hole. The peg must have hit my foot, as I had a clean cut on the inside of my boot just behind my big toe, with a cooresponding one inch cut in the side of my foot.
To get back to camp, I ziptied a big green limb to the bottom of my frame, extending it out each side under the footpeg on one side, and AS the footpeg on the other. Made it all the way back to camp, but didn't want to spend the money on stitches. Left an ugly scar. Still raced the ISDE the following weekend...with much foot pain.
I hate foot issues.

Big calves? I got those and the Sidi's with ACS are the way to go ;)
-
Sidis are veary good, but the RX-2's have to be the roomiest.

Does bob's cycle shop have a website?

I think the everybody has answered pretty d**n efficiently. In short, no, nothing is like or will ever be like the KX500.
As far as boots go: I use AXO RC-5. Very nice, removable foot thingy. :-) Will not ride without them. I usally end up buying like 2 per year, I kill those things. And, I used Alpinestars for a few years before and found that the quality is just the same for $320 when I can get the AXO for usally around $220.

OK,no I dont think in a short drag race any thing is faster or accelerates as fast. But as far as top speed heres some averages in a test a few years ago..Husaberg 650-103.6mph...KX500-107.6mph...KTM 540(big bore kit, other bikes had mods to)-109.1mph...Honda XR650-112.0mph.These were averages,on one run the XR got 122.0mph!This was on a dry lake bed and wind was a facter, but theser were the results they had.But for brute acceleration Id say the KX is KING!
-
The problem with that test you're quoting - I read it also - is that the modded bikes have had fenders cut down, shrouds removed etc... Top speed there is no replacement for displacement ;) HOWEVER... I a real world race situation there are turns and the XR doesn't turn very well. I think the KX500 is in a class all by itself.
-
Yes it is!

Don't forget the KTM 380, it will definately give the KX a run for its $$$$$$$ up to 80mph. It does not compare though if you are looking for torque. I had one with lots of motor mods that would beat 500's in a drag race, but it never had the mile wide power band that the big 500 has. It felt like ridding a 125 on steroids, quick revving with a narrow powerband.
-
Oh ya the CR 500 will run with the KX, but again it does not have as wide a powerband either.
-
Yea your right, the power band is perfect, i was riding with my friend, and he has a rm 125..and he has to shift so fast..we went on the roads he was in 6th gear by the time i was just shifting into 3rd and i flew past him lol, poor guy...as for torque, I dont think there could be any more torque...I think i have too much torque...I cant get traction anywhere...if u could tubb out dirtbikes i would, lol I need a wider tire i guess :?
-
My 520 has the spread of power like the kx but not the same peak, I think if I could combine my modded 380 and 520 I would get a 500 except it would have a more modern chassis & suspension. :)
-
This bike to me is "the great altitude equalizer". 90% of my riding is between 8,000 and 11,000 feet. I am guessing a 2% loss in power per 1000'. That makes my 500 a 250. I always admire you sea-level guys riding this bike with its full arsenal. What stones you must have!
-
<-- Glamis, March 20 - 24, 2003 on my 2001 KX500. I Love the look on the faces of the youngsters when i bust a move

True true, I had a buddy with a KTM 380. A fully modded KTM 380 would not touch a KX500 with gearing and a pipe. Maybe a stock one that has not been jetted correctly. Jet a KX and that is the biggest performance burst I believe.
-
The best way to look at it in my point of view is they dont call the KX500 the KING of the desert for nothing!
-
The altitude thing, I ride at 6500 to7800 ft and the K5 is plenty of bike for me, would like to see what it would do at sea level. Love the torque. Hope we can get parts to keep them runing for ever. Four strokes belong in the truck that has the K5 strapped down in the back.
