Title: Bar risers bent, should I go to 1 1/8" bars?
Post by: GM Man on August 08, 2010, 11:51:10 PM
Well after my tie down broke and my K5 bounced out of my trailer and bent my bar riser and handle bars, I'm thinking about going to the bigger 1 1/8" inch bars.  My question is will my clutch, brake, and throttle all bolt on to the new bars or will have I to use the 7/8" bars?  Anyone on here gone to the 1 1/8" bars, and if so did you like them?

Thanks...

everything works except the bar mounts. 1 1/8 bars don't bend. They have solid risers and rubber mount. I would say the rubber mounts are better. No cross bar on them.

Is there an obvious bend? Many times I have been able to loosen bolts, re-align then tighten back up. Alot of time my buddies have thought they bent the bars or forks, but the bars were just turned in the mounts.

I have 4 bikes with oversized bars.  I would never go back to 7/8" bars.  Even put a set on the KLR650.   The KLR has 7/8" mounts built in to the top clamp so I went with Pro Taper mounts.  Here is a link to what I'm using on the KLR.  Solid mount.

Pro Taper's site is lame as far a pictures of their products.
Link to rubber mount like you would use on a KX500

As far as the K5 I'm a Scotts mount guy.  I like to use their steering stabilizers.

I use their handlebar mounting cones.

"Scotts replacement cones incorporate an injection molded aluminum top washer, which eliminates all the top-hat washers that come with your stock units. Made for KDX, KX, and CR's that use rubber mounted perches these replacements are 30% more dense so they still allow good vibration absorption but won't allow the mis-alignment and "over-flexing" found with the stock units."
They work great.  I've had a few minor "get off's" and never had to find a tree to straighten the bars since I went to the Scotts cones.
As for the fat bars, I'm a Pro Taper EVO guy.  I like and have grown use to the Henry/Reed bend.

Awesome pictures and thanks for the replies.  The stock bars are bent, I can see it on the left side, as well as the paint is now cracked, never was before.  Bar riser is also bent, so I'll be going to the 1 1/8" bars now.  Anyone know of a good brand of bar riser to go with, that will work with my triple tree?

My 500AF is in 2008 450F chassis and OEM uses a standard 5mm offset. Don't know what year bike you have but the link above may help. They don't show the bar mounts (risers) online for a steel frame KX500 but I bet they have them. You may have to call them for a riser P/N if you want Renthal.
