Title: 95 KX5undy
Post by: FPMXer on August 02, 2010, 04:43:00 AM
Going to pick up a nice 95' KX500 tomorrow. It comes with extra's and is built for hill climbing minus the extended swing arm. The guy is on vacation and won't be home till late tonight or I would pick it up today. But for $950 u can't beat it. He told me it's got a rev limiter for 1st and 2nd gear so it goes right up most hills without lifting the front wheel until you hit 3rd then hold on! Anyone know about this rev limiter? I will post pix tomorrow when I bring it home.

That may be a story, FPMXer, it would not need an extra rev limiter. There is a rev limiter in the ignition, but only to prevent an engine failure. You wouldn't want any restrictions hillclimbing. If it was used for competition hillclimbing, it would be equipped with a deadman switch that has a tether that hooks to your hand or roost protector then kills the ignition, if you bail.
I would guess a 93 by the forks, but a very nice find none the less...

Hello FPMX,

I saw that bike for sale and thought about it myself. I didn't need another KX though. Price racing was out of Vegas or Pheonix. They were a desert racing team and won some championships on KX5s. Your KX5 is a desert setup. From your pic I can see a steering dampner and oversize tank, that would have to be one mother of a hillclimb.
Looks like a great deal at that price.

Price racing is also located in San Diego. I'm just stating with the seller told me is all. I'll find out as soon as I go through her real good and get it out on some dirt. I'll mostly ride it in the desert and VET style tracks. The suspension is super plush. I'm gonna take that green tank off and put the bigger desert style with a screw on lid. I'm also gonna put the FMF Gnarly on too. I'll have to replace the reed to carb boot as the one on there is cracked and looks pretty bad. She does kick right over and run but I don't want it to fail while riding.

So your the one that beat me to it.

Was going to go look at it , didn't need another one. But being a price racing bike I told myself I would go look.    Finally got ahold of the guy and it was gone.

Price racing was desert racing driven.   Believe Danny hamel had somthing to do with them till his death of course.

Well per motoverse.com the KX is a 1990 model. There's no record on file with the DMV either.

It could be a 1990, but that would mean somebody changed the forks, 1990's had natural colored forks, as I recall the 91-93 had the blue forks. US

Your right it very well could be a mixture of years. But the VIN say's 1990. Either way it's all what the VIN say's for title purposes.

Jeff Price.  AKA Price Racing back in the 90's.  Lives here in Vegas.  Lives a mile in the desert from my uncles house.  Right near TJ Lavins crib.    A buddy of mine has known him 20 years.   And has a few of those Price Racing seat covers in his garage.   He supposedly has one KX500 left for himself thats at Pro Circuit being built.    Was a desert racing team.
Danny Hamel was known by anyone and everyone who was a desert racer in the 90's.   He was on the factory Kaw team when he died though.

Price Racing team bikes started out as Team Green bikes, new.  They had the frame guards welded on, extra gusseting.  Ran IMS tanks.   Reinforced stock radiators with the top plug welded shut.    He didn't have any 500's that old.  Was on KTMs and another brand back in that era.   98 and newer was when Price had KX's.     They used to sell a Price racing seat cover and decal package though.   Appears this bike has some of that package.

Right now it's a pro-circus system. I'm gonna put the Gnarly on when I go through it.

So I tore it down yesterday to go through her before first flight! The dunlap that was on the rear is history and now has a much larger entrenching tool installed a MotoZ that's 140/80/18. :-D I also found the right side axle block to be cracked almost the whole way through. I already scored another swing arm off fleabay for $16. So I'm waiting on the swingarm and still the carb holder to the motor which should be here today. I took the force fed tank off and will put it on the market. It only needs a petcock and the upper mounts installed as I needed them for the desert tank.

That swing arm has been spanked! Need to go over the rest of the bike with a fine tooth comb.

Already been done. That's all I've found. It's too bad I didn't see that when I bought it. It was hiding under the rear brake assembly. I would have offered less money. But oh well it's all good.

Just a little update. Tore the bike all the way down yesterday. Found one of the front motor mounts to be broken, top steering stem bearing to be wasted and that's about it. Gonna pick up the 93' frame this weekend and it comes with a title! It's undamaged and no weld repairs like the 90'. So I got the frame for $42 and the swingarm for $16 from the same guy. Not bad in my book. All I have to do is wait for the new stem bearings and the bike should be whole once again and running by next weekend.

Not a bad deal. You gonna tear into the engine or just finish the season and rebuild it this winter?

As long as it's running I'm gonna ride it! Our off season here in so-cal is the summer! Winter time is desert season! I'll run it till she blows up then go through the engine.

Bring it on dude! So yesterday I picked up the titled 93' frame for $40 and then traded the guy the desert tank and PC exhaust system for a ready to bolt on cylinder! I have all the parts now and hope to start the rebuild tomorrow as long as it's not to freaking hot! Pic's to follow the rebirth!
