need help with my timing, its been a bugger to start since i had the motor rebuilt. Ive had the electrics replaced, new magneto, stator rewound, its getting spark, back fires a lot and then starts but wont idle. Reeds are good, carburator is new, so what I did is ran a timing light to check timing it should be at about 7 deg but is firing at 90 deg, half way up the bloody barrell is that premature or what :? oh its a k500 1989 what can i do to get it back to 7 deg thanks

Get the manual out and go through the timing proceedure....

are you sure that the key was installed when the flywheel was put on the shaft? with timing that far off, i cant think of anything else it could be. pull the flywheel and verify that the key is in place and that it is not sheared from an initial backfire.

I'm sorry I don't know how to put everything in order :|
You should find what you need here:

To me it sounds like a sheared key as maddoggy pointed out.

thanks for the replys, the key is good but the magneto is the wrong one for that year motor. So am going to get a new key way cut into the magneto. Fingers x :-D

This sounds like a recipie for detonation disaster too me....

i agree with polarbus. i would not take a chance on cutting a new keyway. sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. if you cant afford a new one now, you would be better off to save up for a while and buy the proper mag. seriosly, i wouldn't try the repair. think about what pre-det. does. it fires the fuel/air charge while the piston is still on the way up tries to force it back down. bad, bad, bad things can happen to your motor. motor repairs could cost more than the proper part. not being a jerk here, just trying to help.

you would be money ahead to upgrade to a 90 and newer ignition

Have you checked it with a degree wheel, and dial indicator down the plug hole? I wouldn't trust a timing light in this application....

All right guys you've scared the pants off me, I will get the right magneto. Thanks for the replies. And have a good weekend.
