I know we are all into bikes, but I figured in most cases a gearhead is a gearhead and is into cars too. So, here's the 92 Ranger I've been building over the last few winters. And to answer it right away... Why a Ranger? Well, it was my daily driver through High School and University, so I figured it deserved some loving. They are very light weight, and should go pretty decent with a V8.
The engine is a 89 roller cam 5.0 block, 0.030 over with domed Keith Black pistons for 10.4:1 compression with the Trick Flow Track Heat aluminum heads. .542/.563 lift hyd roller cam. Edelbrock RPM Air gap intake and 670 Holley 4bbl. Transmission is a C4 with manual valvebody and 3500 stall converter. Rear end is a 8.8 with 31 spline moser axles, detroit locker and 3.73 gears. Suspension is mostly stock. I have Competition Engineering drag shocks in the front, and slide-a-link traction bars in the rear. I also converted to manual steering. The interior has a bit of a 60's hot rod vibe, with the mooneyes steering wheel, tuck and roll metalflake vinyl seat, and tall double bend shifter.

nice if you can get it to hook up should be enough to go low 12's maybe even high 11's. 1 couple suggestion i would make is put a H or X pipe on it 302's need a little help scavenging. and if you don't already have one that setup would respond nicely to a 1 inch carb spacer. you probably already know this but it going to want a lot of timing, 35* or more advanced
-
I haven't run the exhaust yet, so I still have the chance to add a crossover if desired. I'm planning to run 2-1/2 dumping before the axle.
I've got miles of hood clearance, so I can experiment with carb spacers. I'm planning to tune the ignition and carb on a chassis dyno.
-
Cool project! She's gonna go for sure. I've wanted an extended cab Ranger for years. I have an S-10 with a pretty basic 383 stroker that I need to put back together.
350 4bolt
400 crank
202 fulie heads
1.6:1 Scorpion roller rockers
Comp Cams DEH 275 cam (I have a XR294HR and all the retro fit stuff in a box waiting on the AFR heads)
Performer RPM intake
Performer 750cfm carb, might throw a Qjet on it when I put her back together.
Headman headers (currently 1 1/2" primary shorties, but going to purchase some 1 5/8" long tubers soon)
Hooker Aero Chamber 2 1/2 to 2 1/2 mufflers
And no idea how to tune it! That comment on timing baffles me.
This was in my rock crawler until recently. It didn't like to crawl so I put it in the vehicle it was built for anyway...

this 289 is going into a toyota pickup. 12:1's, HO heads, blue racer cam, comp rocker, weiand air striker. not as wild as your 302 but should move the toy pretty good.

12:1 in a sbf is huge. With a bigish bore and short stroke, they are hard to build compression with. Do you have really big domes on those pistons, or did you mill down the heads/block like mad?
-
Friar Tuck sent me a PM asking about the bike on the lift, so I'll mention it here as well. It's a 1975 Can-am 250. Rotax 2 stroke. The frame is a modified stock frame. Betor triple trees and kyb forks. Akront rims.
I don't know where the flattracker bodywork came from, but I had it painted in green candy over silver metalflake, with Rat Fink on the tank.
This bike is very low budget. Under $1500 for the whole thing as it sits in these pics.

Your project is coming along NICE! I work on projects like that every day. Less the cool motor and trans.
Here's 2 radiator core supports, before and after, blasted with aluminum oxide.

yep big domes on the pistons.

On the topic of radiator core supports...
These ranger's have a weird front inner sheetmetal design. The core support and inner fenders are all welded in with the cab. My core support was rusty out, so I cut it out, and then drilled holes to bolt the new one in with 1/4in bolts.
I guess I could show the issues that came up fitting the engine...
Fox body mustang oil pan fit the cross member well.
Stock transmission mount and crossmember were retained, but moved forward a couple inches.
Farbricated motor mount adapter plates bolted to stock crossmember holes, and used the engine mounts from early 289 Mustang.
Frame rail needed 1/2in notch for header clearance on passenger side. You'll also see the coil spring bucket was rusted out. I ended up changing the crossmember, leaf spring hangers/shackles and coil spring brackets on the frame. I really only retained the frame rails.
Custom radiator that fits inside the core support, rather than behind. Needed for water pump clearance. I wasn't able to retain a mech fan.
Notched the heater box for valve cover clearance. I cut it out with a soldering iron, flipped the piece around and plastic welded it back together with the soldering iron. I think I can make this look factory if I spend some more time cleaning it up.
This picture will explain why I converted to manual steering. The pump and box were fighting for the same real estate.
The manual box is much lighter, and loses the pump too. I wanted to do this swap anyways.
At that stage I had the most of the fitment/fabrication done, so I pulled everything apart and started cleaning it all up. I spent about 4hrs a piece with these spindles. The before and after pictures are dramatic!
The frame was blasted, and I changed the hangers, a cross member, and coil bucket.
And then painted it myself in my home brewed paint booth. Take it from me, do NOT spray urethane paint without a good respirator. I got very sick. On the bright side, it came out looking good. I almost looked like I knew what I was doing. My very first time painting.
From then on it has just been slowly reassembling everything with new or cleaned/restored parts. I am about 4 years into the project now.
The body mods aren't really noticeable, unless you know Rangers. The drip rails were shaved, and the seams welded and filled on the back of the cab. The box isn't done yet, but it will have shaved stake pockets and fuel filler.

Looks good snoop! Anyone who has ever done this type of project knows the incredible hard work that it takes! I also learned a lot about the joy of a finished project of such magnitude. About the never ending money pit, frustration, patience, and the ungodly amount of hours it takes. I am truly looking forward to my next project. B.O.
-
Cool stuff!
I love hot rod sleepers.
Mine is not much of a sleeper, the flames give me away. Sorry for no pics. Still a newbie. I have a 66 malibu, with a 388 stroker and lots of timing(between 450 & 500hp the builder thinks). I just put in a richmond 6 speed od tranny. In 6th I can lug @1700rpm/75mph. With all the timing (38drgs) the motor runs like a 2t, comes on hard (like hitten the power band) at 3000rpms and jumps to the limiter (7000) in any gear but 6th. It just pulls real hard, I always back out of it. I have to many tickets as is. Your project looks sweet. Looking forward to updates.
-
This won't be a very convincing sleeper... :-D. It's going to have even more show than go, but the go will be decent.
-
Even still, people wouldn't think that there would be a v8 in a ranger, let alone a bad @$$ v8. No matter how nice it is, there will always be a bit of sleeper. It will be real cool to spank little fox bodies and camaros. They won't even know what happened. Have fun, I'm looking forward to up dates.
-
Yeah, I suppose you are right. People will probably assume it is just another shiny minitruck.
-
After I got started rebuilding the KX, this project went stagnant for almost a year, but I got back at it at Christmas time.
Here's the video of it being fired up for the first time. I still hadn't timed it, or made any carb adjustments.

Holy Cow!!...
I love hearing you and your Dad--- Get IN!! .... BE CAREFUL!!! I'll get out and film you around the Yard...
You Scared the poor guy! ( and I don't think it's the first time!)
Great stuff John! That sounds like a Nascar Truck! WooHoo!
Like Pop said You better be careful! :-D
Great work so far, can't wait to see the next installment!

It's coming along slowly. The bodywork on the box is complete, and the inside painted. I've spent much of this winter wiring. Definately my most hated part of the build. Getting closer all the time though. I think it is possible I could have it wired by spring, and then I can paint it over summer, and hopefully do up all the final assembly and details next winter.

d**n snoop... that thing is comming along nice!..
Must see a shakedown vid!

To say I am excited to see it coming together is an understatement. It's been in process almost 7 years now! It has meant no KX riding this season though. I haven't even fired up my 500 this year, but just decided I needed to get this truck done.
I've got all the wiring sorted out now. I've taken all this stuff off for paint, but here's some of my test-fitting of dash and lights, bumpers, etc. It should go together pretty easy now. It starts are runs with a turn of the key now... not like in the last video when I had switches vice gripped to the hood hinges.

I was on the farm for the last 5 weeks. I did some work on it whenever there was some dew in the mornings during harvest. I'm back in the city again, so won't see much of the truck until Christmas now.
It still has a fair bit of work left to do on it, but if you squint it looks like a complete truck now.
I got the grille, bumpers, and lights in.

Lookin good! I have a similar project. Its a 91 GMC C1500 RCSB that I bought new, then built it up around 96 then took it apart again in 2000. Its been sitting ever since and it kills me everytime I look at it! Hopefully I can get to it in the next few years and get it back on the road.
This was at the 98 Hot Rod Powertour. St Petersburg Fla
(http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a65/thumper4str/rob91sierraIMG.jpg)
-
My old man was really worried I would do that... take it apart and not get it back together! I had one really slow winter on the truck when I rebuilt my KX, but I've always managed to keep making slow progress on it.
-
Well, truck is basically finished now. All I have left is the exhaust, headlight knob and speedometer driven gear. I was previously unaware the manual and auto trans take a different gear.
Most of the work was in installing the Dakota digital indicator. It shows what gear I am in, as well as controlling the neutral safety switch, and reverse lights. It also has high beam indicator and turn signal indicators. I figured it is a pretty clean way to go when swapping trans and gauges.
