9 years ago I ice raced a 1976 IT490. Lots of fun and very reliable bike. Wish I would have kept it. Parts were cheap and easy to find at the time.
-
u sure it was a 490 they didnt appear till 83 76 that wouldnt of been a 425 i think
-
76 was the first year and it was a 400. 425 came out in 80, 465 in 81 and 82, 490 in 83 and 84.
I used to ocasionally race a 84 IT490 in enduros in 85 and 86. Did my first Blackwater 100 on it also. It had a great motor, smooth and torquie. Im on the IT site, great site!

It's been 9 years since I sold the bike for $30 Lost all my pics over the years but found one that looks close. It's a 400.

Mine didn't have any fenders or side panels but did have the blue plastic tank. The expansion chamber went over the top of the engine and came out the right side. Had a decompression lever in the second spark plug hole. Sat really low to the ground. It had dual shocks on it. Drum brakes front and rear. It was a mean bike. Tore my leg up every time I tried to start it. Guy I bought it from said it was a 76 and that's what I paid for it.

If it was a dual shocker, it was more than likely a DT400. The ITs always had a single shock. The DT was the street legal enduro. Much like a TS Suzuki.

I thought all DTs had metal tanks?
-
Wow. My neighbor had an IT175 and was racing Enduros in Michigan. Then he got an IT465. But I can't remember what year of bike that was. Think the 175 was a 1979? Another neighbor had a Suz PE175. Little ways away was a KDX175. I was pretty young at the time with a Yam GT80. Those were the days. If I saw any YZ or IT 400 465 or 490 I would jump on it now.

If you need parts for a 1977 IT400, I have them here...

They did, it could have had a aftermarket tank on it such as a Vesco. I believe they came in differant colors.
Id like to find a 82 IT465 or 83 IT490 to add to my collection. I already have a couple nice PE400s. Also would like to add a KDX400,420 or 450.

Nice Yamaha IT site. thanks for sharing.

Didn't know they were into making plastic aftermarket tanks back then. I do miss whatever that blue thing was lol. Lots of fun and could pull the wheel up at any time on the ice. Never had it in the dirt :( I'd buy another one though just to beat the crap out of.
