looking for a pipe for my 87 k5. are there any other years that interchange or does it have to be for an 87. cant seem to even find a good used one.
-
K5Dad,
I went to Service Honda and looked up '86-'87-'88.
They all have different part #'s
Service Honda looks like you may be able to order one...<gulp> Muffler Part #18002-1715 $409.23

I just made a 89-04 fit my 87.
Welded a tab for the lower mount to the frame. And extend the under tank mount if I remember. (can check if u would like)
Bolted right up after that
as I. Like you couldn't find a nice pipe to save my life,,, my stocker was literaly broke in 3 sepparate pieces
-
thanks for the replies. would rather not spend 400 on a new one. if its as simple as welding on a couple new tabs, i would certainly be willing to do that. if you could check motorrad i would appreciate it. thanks again, scott

pro circuit will sell you a platinum (mid-top) pipe new, 200 us dollars if my memory serves me correctly, didnt know that when i was looking for one for my 86 model, so i bought an 88-04 fmf gnarly.easy enough to make it fit on an 86, so an 87 should be childsplay.HTH.K.
-
the gnarly pipe is the one i am interested in if i cant find a stocker. do you remember what was involved in getting it to fit your 86?
-
the 86 has a totally different frame at the back end to the 87, you just need to use a bit of imagination when your doing your mounts.my fmf went on without cutting or welding anything, but the 87 frame is very simillar to the 88 at worst.go for it.there are two fmf gnarly pipes.(didnt know that when i bought mine either) the midrange pipe is 020055, the top end pipe('desert') is 020038.the pro circuit pipe is pk87500p.HTH.K.

thanks for the help! i just didnt want to start cutting up a new pipe. if its as simple as adjusting the frame mounts then i think i will give it a shot. thanks again!

due to owning an 86, Ive got a decent knowledge of what later parts you can use on the early bikes, and i can usually find most of the older bits you cant retro-fit with later model parts, so if you have any questions about anything else just shout.also, you might want to check out the links in the 'parts identification help' which you will find in the 'In General' section.K.

so i ended up calling pro circuit yesterday to ask some questions about the platinum and platinum2 pipes. he said that even if the 88 and newer pc2 pipe would fit my 87 that my bike would run terrible because the newer bikes have a different port design than the 87. wondering if this same info applies to the 88 and newer fmf pipes?
-
i'll go on ebay to find the platinum pipe for the 87 for you.give me ten minutes and i'll post you the item number on here.my 86 RAN HARD with the 88-04 pipe, and i wouldnt say that if it wasnt true.they still have the same bore and stroke.i wouldnt worry too much about that.after the stock pipe it felt like i'd put another 10 bhp all the way through the rev range.try and find you the pc pipe item number now.
-
go to ebay and search 3602 2478 1061 (but dont put spaces in.did that so its easier to read), 87 KX500 Pro Circuit Platinum pipe, $198.Hope that sorts it for you.K.
-
thanks! found that link. was hoping to find good used one but may just have to get the new one.
-
you'll struggle to find any used ones for the older bikes, let alone a good one. I'm doing mine on a tight budget, but the money for a new pipe is cash well spent.get yourself a pipe guard too.K.
-
i have a stock 2002 pipe and silencer, you could have it for cheap if you want it. there is no dents or anything wrong with the pipe, I just upgraded to the PC2  big difference..
-
I have noticed on the newer pipes that there is a bracket down by the front of the engine. My 87 pipe does not have this. Does this bracket get eliminated if the newer pipe is used on the 87 or does it connect to the frame somewhere?
-
well i finally quit screwing around and ordered a new pipe. i decided to go with the pro circuit platinum. should have it by the end of next week! thanks to all who replied on this subject!
-
well after some problems locating the platinum pipe( talked to pro circuit and they are backordered and not far enough to do a run of 50 which is how they prefer to do it and i understand) the guy i bought the pipe from offered me a works pipe for my 87 that was left over in their wharehouse. after authenticating the pipe with pro circuit i took it and it looks fantastic on the bike. my question is does anyone have any tips on keeping it looking good. thanks!

PJ1 clear coat paint. Unless you want to scrub it with scotch-brite and wd40 it after every ride.

thanks for the tip roost!
