I have a 87 k5, the boot on the carburetor is dry rotted. But, it's discontinued, will the 89-04 work? :? Thanks.

I'm pretty sure the bolt pattern is the same but the part numbers are different and the neck that the carb slides into looks longer on the 88, different part number again and looks longer and straighter on the 89-04 compared to the 88 and 87. I would keep an eye out on ebay or if it's not falling apart completely you can use black silicone to seal it. Works good I've had to use that method quite a few times. Just make sure you get the kind that can handle gas and oil or it will make a mess.

The issue is going to be that the '87 used a VM Mikuni vs. the '88 and newer more common Kehin PWK. You might be able to retrofit a newer manifold, Kehin carb, and then modify the '87 airbox boot to accept the Kehin carb ?

I've repaired a set of boots on an old '81 KZ440 using Goat's silicone method. Holds up really well. Again make sure you use the gas/oil tolerant kind. A thin layer on the inside and outside seals up real well.

Hey guys thanks for all the info. I think I'm going to look into updating the carb with the pwk 39. What are the benefits of the newer carb, other than that fact it'll be easier to get parts. Update...... I've been told to run a pwk 38 by a local guy that says the 39 drains gas and the the 38 will run much better. True or untrue? I'm skeptical because he has a 38, but I could get it for $40. Is it an option?? Thanks again

455,
Check to see what jets & slide # is in there, as you can have the 38 bored to a 39 or 41.5 if you want, but it may be cheaper in the long run to find one with proper jets/slide already in there. The 38 should add a little more bottom with less top if that is what you want (do you really need more bottom?)
Hope this helps

87 uses the new style frame but old style subframe. The angle of the old boot is different. I junked the air cleaner assemble on mine and went to a sock. Them old ones are getting hard to find parst for. Yes I thought about buying one off of ebay, figured I'd be buying another junk one.
