Can anyone share their ideas or what they use to carry extra gas? I have heard about fender "tanks." Can't find anything online. Some of my friends put gas in plastic bottles and carry it in their back pack - I don't feel too comfortable with that idea. Any input would be appreciated. B.O.

Maier used to make a extra tank that mounted where your front number plate is , clamps to the forks and you run your vent line to its cap and then your bike sucks that tank dry like a straw, works great I have one and use it on my 250 it came with Roostdaddy's K5 when he bought it.CBX

Heres the link for that tank CBX is referring to.

Thanks Roost. That tank used to come in 2 different sizes, I think .8 gal & 1.4. It works great and is removable so you don't have to run with it all the time, and you don't really notice it up there and it drains that tank first.CBX

Thanks, RoostDaddy. That tank will be a life/ride saver for my type of riding. ted

I have the 1.3 but have not installed it. I can take pictures if you would like. Link shows the 2 different front tanks and the rear mounted tank. http://www.acerbis.com/p150_tank/11250006.html
I would not want to do an emergency rear get off with the rear mount Acerbis.
If your good at tig welding, here's a link that will give you some ideas.

This is how I did it a few years back. That's an old plastic gas can that seals tight. You don't want a self venting gas can. You'll have gas everywhere if it's vented and your doing hard core off road.

Thanks Danger. Is that a 3.9 gallon Clarke tank? ted

I am in the process of getting a gas storage device made to carry extra gas in my pack. However, I need more gas for this weekends ride. Has anyone used MSR fuel bottles for camp stoves? A friend of mine told me about them. It seems a lot of the guys on Thumber Talk are using them. The largest is 30 oz.

There's LOTS of direct experience to be found on ADVRider dot com
These guys always carry extra gas.
You can also find more experience by searching the interwebs for "TAT" or "Trans America Trail."
There's lots of Forums that have TAT sections or threads, and outfitting for extra gas is pretty common.
I carry oil if I am on a DS ride that has gas stations, but for trails, I have not done any that don't get me back to the truck in 1 tank. ('cept that time I ran outta gas in LPNF, heh heh).
