Title: 99 KX500 into 01 KX125?
Post by: kritter811 on November 02, 2009, 03:35:04 PM
How much trouble do you have when you do this?
New to site if some one could show me where some threads about this type of swop might be I would apreicieate it.

Another question: what might an 01 kx500 motor with a said 10hr on topend be worth if it came with motor, kicker, stator, carb, reed cage and all electronics.  There is one for sale localy and thought I might want the rest of it.

Thanks

 Kritter,
There are several guys in the A.F. Thread that I'm sure you will want to check out,
the Aluminum Frame Gang have posted up pic's and how to's,  and  what to look out for's.
  http://www.kxriders.com/forums/index.php/board,24.0.html

The price of the stuff for sale locally can be checked out for a going rate on e-bay.
I would caution you there have been quite a few of us who got bikes with engines that were
"Freshly Re-built", "New Top End" "LO Hours on re-build"  and ended up pretty much having to go through the whole engine again.
You may consider  setting a side a little over $100.00 (gaskets and consumables) to go through the engine your self, so you Know what you've got.  Then you can make an assessment as to what you might or might not need to Replace, Repair or continue to Run.

I wouldn't use a 125 frame, if you do you will have to cut out the cradle and totally rebuild it. A 250 frame will allow you to drop the motor in much easier, in fact you can use the bottom motor mount, having only to manufacture the front mount. I'm only talking about the frame there are numerous other mods you'll have to make but to the frame thats it

Friar-Tuck  That is sound advice.  I bought a 96 cr500 that I was told that the Honda shop had put a new top end in and I locked it up in about 10 rides.  I started looking for a kx 500 and found 2 and was just thinking about buying both and making one great bike and parting the rest out and just don't have much of an idea what that stuff might be worth if it is infact in good shape(if it is not I would fix or not sale).

I did not know where to look for the 500 into the 125 since it is not an AF.

Thank you for the reply

don46 thanks for the reply, I saw a 125 on craigslist real cheap and it just got the wheels turning. What would be the easiest year 250 to convert?  I don't want to mess with the aluminum frame again, I had an 02 cr500afc and it just worried me and every thing was real tight.  I know people that can weld but not any that can make 2 peices of aluminum stick together and look good.  Where is a good place to look for this kind of thing on here?

Thanks again

What about an older, steel frame 250? Would there be an advantage over the 500 steel frame?

 What about This ??
http://www.kxriders.com/forums/index.php/topic,6569.0/topicseen.html

I'm pretty sure unless you have the shop skills & tools you can't build this level of AF for this price.   It seems by the time you gather the parts and add machine work and welding you'd be out
more than the asking price. That's half the price of a new bike and has all "The Good Stuff"
installed.
Is this thinking out of line?  I am in no position monetarily to even start this kind of project.
What would you guys say who have actually built these Jewels recommend?

I've only done the 99-02 250 frames the 05 250f frame both of which are steel, but the 99-02 is the easiest.

What are the advantages? What are some of the mods you have to do?
