Title: Differences in KX500 motors
Post by: witdogg on August 30, 2009, 01:13:09 PM
Hey guys, first post.

Does a 89 and newer KX500 motor have the same motor mounts as the 87/88?

Is it a bolt in swap?

I believe its an easy swap as the head stay brackets are the only thing I know that are different.  You may just need to fab up a new set of these.

I put an 87 motor into a 92 frame. The bottom mount and front mount lined right up and were the correct width. The one with the swingarm was even in the right spot. I had to fab up some spacers for the shock linkage, but I was using the 87 swingarm on the newer frame/shock. The cylinder head stay had to be fab as well. I could get it to bolt to the head and hit one of the two holes on the frame, but not both.

Thanks a lot for all that info.
