Doordie I was riding in a snow 1' to 1.5' the other day and was wondering do you use ice screws or studs in your tires?I also heard its better to stud a hard terrain tire because of the soft rubber compound and close tread pattern allows more studs than a mud tire with a open tread pattern that would have fewer knobs to stud. But most of the snow is wet,so I would think a mud/paddle tread pattern would be better to clean it's self out.Im not talking about ice racing, just trail riding in the ice/snow.But I was wondering what you suggest? Thanks.

Hello mikesmith!
Glued studs is the answer for your questions!
You can use any MX-tire/enduro for this and I use about 300 studs for each tire.
Don`t use carstuds because it?s to short. :(
If you wanna have a good "ready to use" tire, look at Trelleborg winterfriction (Swedish tire)! 8)

Thanks!

Three years ago, I showed up to a regional race in December that was certian to be icy draws, uphills, and downhills. In preparation, I put a sheet metal screw in each knob on the tire for all three bikes. My thought was that if the weather changed and the ice melted, the studs wouldn't matter, so we opted to play it safe and add screws.
Day of the race...really icy! As other racers looked at our bikes and realized we had studded our tires on all three bikes, the complaints began. The promoter was even going to require us to remove the studs before the event, but a quick check of the rules revealed that no rule existed that precluded our creative solution to traction in an icy offroad race.
At the end of the day, we all three won our classes, while others went home with broken bones.
The next year, you'll never guess what rule appeared...Yup, not studs allowed in the tires.
Often, a real understanding the rules can lead to victory...until they change the rules. Sounds like the NASCAR rule book.

Doordie,I was wondering do you stud your own tires or do you buy them with the studs already in them?I heard if you stud your own to use studs like they have on the ralley race cars.Since this type of racing isnt common in the states I just wondered what you did for tires?I heard of the winterfriction tires, but I want to do mine myself,so any more information would be great, thanks.

Hi mikesmith!
Our regulation says we have to use a standardstud who is determinded for enduro and for MX is it another stud and the type is "lenirexstud".
We have also a specialclass who have a very sharpstud look at www.iceroadracing.com a finnish website.
Maybe you can use rallystud but you have to glue them with a specialglue as LOCTITE.
But my advise to you, buy them ready fixed.
I do not my own tires, have a shop near my hometown who is expert with right tools and so.
