so i got a new tank, only problem its purple. yes thats right, purple. not sure why they would do that to the very manly kx500. so i want to paint it to match the rest of the bike. i have tried a product called "fusion" with ok results. anyone got something that will give great results. tips or anything else? thanks
-
i have not worked with fusion.
but as far as my findings with painting/painted mx tanks ,don,t go there i,d say
it,ll come off one way or another ,for sure if u use it for mx /trials
had seen briljant sprayed tank, done with high qual.car lack ,
and it was damaged by barks and hits ,
wouldn,t look good anymore ,repair was impossible, the tank was done quite thick,
and whole craters were in the paint .
but that,s just my 2cent :-)

fusion will not stick to tank due to fumes out-gassing (i think thats the correct term).
-
d**n, so am i stuck with a purple tank?
-
The fusion is pretty good plastic paint. The next step up is autobody type plastic paint systems (plastic prep/primer/adhesion promoter/paint) The issues (as mentioned before) is the out gassing of the fumes through the plastic. Thats why tank graphics have holes in them. I have seen graphics that cover the side of the kx tank almost covering the color. There are also companies on ebay that make fabric tank covers that look pretty good (in pics anyway). On TT I ran into a writup from someone dying a blue tank black, with instructions and pics. Did a good job and claims is lasts. Worth a look. Cam.

got a clear ims oversized ill let go cheap, orrr got a purple seat to make them match :-D
-
hey Cam, whats "tt" and how do i find this write up?
hey slow600,whats cheap?

A buddy of mine is a professional painter and has done two tanks for me. It goes like this, sand done to 600 grit, coat of sealer (must have a hardener mixed in), two coats of high solid primer with hardner, sand, 2 coats of base color, then apply any decals, 3 coats of clear. Looks killer for 1-2 years then will start to crack. The key is the hardner being added to prevent the gas fumes from attaching the paint. No spray bomb paint will stay.
Purple tank... ouch
-
d**n this is hella weak. i hate when a good deal cost me more then i expacted. d**n. i will check in to the sealer or if Cam tells me more about the dying. d**n

the method using rit dye does work on going from lighter colors to darker. it will not work on purple.
-
if i have to i will go to black.i was checking on the net, and keep coming back to rit. how much do u think that will take to dye some thing that big?
(sorry did not know d*mn was a bad word on this forum)
-
heres some options for ya. $50, $25, and $25 shipped. i know not classifieds jus trying to help.

what about the green one?stock? and u'll take $25?
-

-
im very greatful. im going to try the dye thing before i just thouw in the towel on the tank i just bought today(d*mn,im mad at myself) if it does not work out then i will get back at u on the tanks. i will know by the end of the week.

Show that purple tank. I like purple. Whats the problem? Everyone has a green one. You can still trade or return it before you start painting or dying it. Once you do that, its toast. Can you get purple shrouds?
-
im not sure on the purple shrouds. i know u can get purple seats. if u like purple we could trade. my racing team is called BLACK BEARD'S OUTLAW GREEN RACING TEAM. im the captain(there is just 2 of us so far :-D ), would not look right if i rode a purple tanked bike.
ps, slow600, i sent u a pm. did u get it?
-
Let me know, if getting these other tanks doesn't work out. I maybe up for a trade. Or if you do buy another, maybe sell me that one. My 250 has a purple tank and purple shrouds already.
