I just changed the oil in my 2000 kx 500 and the sight glass is at the half way mark, does anybody know the level it should be at thanks

Clymer M447-2 says middle of sight window (pg.66)
Recommended oil Table 3 (pg.102) SAE 10/30 or 10/40 (I'm not touching this one with a ten foot pole!)
Capacity clutch/tranny Table 6 (pg.103) KX 500 1983-on 800 cc's or 27.1 fl.oz.
also found in Quick Reference Data (front of book) pgs. IX & XI

I used to run mine at the top of the window. I feel better with more oil although it may not mean anything. On my 450 it is advised to run more oil as it covers some of the bearings/bushings better that are located higher up in the trans and not actually immersed (or partially) in oil. This is most likely not true for the KX but on the 450's they are going for min weight and thus reduce oil quantities to the min possible. Cam.

Synthetic in the gear box?
Does this engine use an oil filter? Forgive my newness, but I'm coming from an XR650.

No filter, change oil often.
