Title: Street legal KX5 in Nevada.
Post by: martinfan30 on January 20, 2009, 03:15:24 AM
Hey all. Looking at getting a 2000 KX5 this weekend. Any thoughts, tips, places to look for ideas on this?

Stator output? Turn signal additions? Headlight? Horn?

Thanks guys.

Rich.

Hi Martinfan30,

Browse this site, there's bound to be a ton of information for your KX500. What are the laws in Nevada for street legalizing a dirt bike? I'd try to find that out first. If possible I'd keep away from turn signals; just my opinion  :-D .  As far as a horn there are a lot of options, search through some mountain bike sites for a cheap battery powered unit that will mount to your bars with a thumb switch. Do you need a mirror? Again browse the MT. Bike sites and find one. www.rockymountainmc.com also has various street kits you can search through, including high output stators. Keep in mind you'll likely need a rear light and brake light (master cylinder switch), as well as DOT approved tires. Good luck.

one more thing. As far as DOT tires, I recommend the Michelin Baja (if you have an 18 inch rear that is)

 Hi Martinfan30,
To be truly street legal and keep the cop's off of you, your best bet is to do an Internet search for your state's revised statute for traffic code. For instance, in Arizona, it's the Arizona Revised Statute, Title 28, which is the traffic code and will state specifically what the minimum equipment standards are for motorcycles. As for a horn, here in AZ the only requirement is that it can be heard for 200 feet. You can go to Wal-Mart and get a squeeze horn for a bicycle and mount it somewhere that can be reached, and your good to go. You can probably find a mirror for a bicycle there too. Our code says you must have a mirror. It says nothing about being able to see anything in it. Besides, with vibration like that, it's best to have your head on a swivel anyway and don't rely on a mirror. Signals may not be required if you can use hand signals. As for lighting, an upgraded stator and light kit will get you going.
Good luck and ride like you are invisible.

first stop is DMV or state pages to find out what it takes in your state to make an off road an on road. There should be specific equipment lists. In my area, you are required to furnish papers from the mfg. stating that the mc passes emissions, and what equipment is required to make the bike dot legal. One of the required pieces is a METAL GAS TANK! Sheesh, that seems like a great idea.  Good luck, I really wanted to road legal my K5 until I found out all that bs. Your best bet is to find one that is already plated.
