Title: converting 2006 kx250 to a trail bike
Post by: kxAcosta on January 14, 2009, 04:29:06 PM
I currently have a 2006 kx250 and i am planning on doing a lot of trail riding and was wondering what would be the easiest way to get rid of a good portion of the top end and have more bottom torque? Ive already upgraded to a fmf gnarley pipe.

kxAcosta,
The KX250 can be made into an excellent trail bike.  The gnarly pipe is a great start for more low end torque.  Are you wanting to increase the low end torque or detune the "hit" overall?  For improving low end torque I would suggest (in order of importance):

1.  Add 2-3 teeth to the rear sprocket.
2.  Install different reeds (better -> Boysen dual-stage reeds) (best -> Vforce reeds)
3.  Installing a 14-16 oz steahly flywheel weight.

I would ride the bike a bit after these mods to see if you still want to remove the top end hit.  Hope this helps. Cam.

Thank you very much for your feedback. I would also like to know if i bought a flywheel weight does it just bolt on? Yes i am trying to detune the top end hit. Do you have any suggestions on the stiff suspension?

Flywheel weights are a bolt on item.  Not a real hard thing to install.  Great investment for woods riding.

As for the suspension, I never have gotten my '02 soft enough for my taste but a good suspension shop could easily take care of that.

I have an 06 250 as well, I never liked the bike, it has killer mid-top end but pretty soft on the bottom. two things, there is a return spring on the kips that is prone to breaking, make sure it's in good shape, secondly I bought another motor off ebay and sent the cylinder to Kustom Kraft and had a big bore made, it is a 301cc and now has torque up the wazhoo, took out a goodly amount of the hit and softened it. It still runs strong, just more everywhere, thats the motor I'm putting in an AL frame sometime. The guys name at Kustom Kraft is Marvin, he's a great guy and really easy to work with.
