I am a faithfull air filter lip seal greaser. Lately I have read in a few magazines that they don't do this anymore. I am not sure why. Friday I went on an epic ride and spent all day as the tailend in a line of 5 bikes, clouds of blinding silty dust (I was most experienced at dust riding so volunteered to be at the end). When I cleaned my filter that night it was of course completely poluted with caked dust but delightfully pristine inside. My question is, How many here grease their filter lip seals or am I old school. Curious Cam.
ps I even grease the seal on my truck filter. :-D

i view the lip seal greasing as a sort of double protection. if you can protect your engine a little more by greasing the seal why not? i use a silicone o-ring & seal lube on mine that is super sticky too protect against sand intrusion. it doesn't wash off when you clean the filter so i don't worry about the silicone contaminating the filter. i also use pantyhose material over the airbox intake as a precaution. I grease.

I will always grease the filter lip. I guess I'm old school too.
-
I grease, considered one of the foam seals that stuck to the filter cage, but ditched the idea. It is especially important to prevent dirt intrusion on the new 4t's.
-
I will always grease the filter lip. It only takes a minute, works perfect at keeping all grit out. Why screw around with a perfected process and take a chance at destroying the nikasyl ? John
PS guess I am "old skool " too.

Cheap protection-I grease.
-
No grease, never had problems. Even in deep dusty sand.
Use Twin-Air oil or Putoline if its availeble in US. Its the same.
There is nothing better.

Always greased here. Never trouble, extra protection, I am also old school I guess.

"Pro-seal." You don't have to grease anymore. Excellent seal to seal. Less mess. Easier cleanup. Used to grease before I spent the $15.

Grease... a tub seems to last forever and i'm so cheap, I have trouble spending bucks for something that i don't really need... like quick touch fork tube air vent buttons ment to replace your flat head screwdriver. 8-) 8-)
on another note, has anyone used 2-stroke oil to coat there filters( on 2 smokers of course)

I'm not thinking I would use 2t oil for my filter, filter oil has a solvent in the bottle that evarporates and what's left is usually quite sticky. I would think you would pull the 2 t oil through the filter into the motor, but hey, I've been wrong before so lets hear what others have to say. Oh and I use belray filter oil but have been contemplating going to the no toil just for ease of clean up.
-
I would agree with you don... air filter oil is very tacky where as 2t oil is very slippery. If I had an emergency filter problem and had no filter oil but did have 2t I would use that instead of running a dry filter but deffinitely not as a substitute for filter oil.
P.S. I use grease on the lip as well

grease bolts ,axles, head tubes,etc.....its cheap insurance and air filters should always a grease seal on them, its not like the stuff is expensive
-
Grease is cheap; I grease.
I've always lived by the motto: if you take care of it, it will take care of you. Keep em clean and keep em GREEN!
-
I grease the filter/airbox and where the cage and filter meet @ the bolt . always use a pre-filter Notoil is your friend

The Pro Seal works great guys. 15 bucks. No Toil is also great, Don. Couple minutes, at most, in the sink, the filter looks brand new. Its a biodegradeable powder cleaner that really knocks it out quickly. Also, I think their cleaner is easier on the foam material, so the filters last a long time. The Pro seal is like a dense foam rubber. Its very sticky on the airbox side, and on the filter side. Now its a bummer to grease the couple bikes we have without the pro seal. It does not leak. With just filter oil to the seal. When filter is removed the Pro seal is still looking brand new. Had them for over 4 years, with No Toil, very happy.
Also, just read that the No toil cleaner does not disolve the seam-glue of air filters, like petroleum products, so they stay in one piece. Saves time, money and parts, can't go wrong with it.
-
I grease filter and also use either airfilter spary on oil or the same premix oil i use in the engine (Maxima)
-
I grease with the NoToil grease. I use this filter oil also.
Note that you can not use this on UNI filters, it breaks down the glue and they fall apart.
I use Twin Air, NoToil, or stock filters without issue. This filter oil also doesn't seem to like sitting for long periods, so I suggest re-cleaning after storage.
Maxima FFT otherwise with standard grease, but cleaning is a pain.

for sure. i greese up the lip on my filter. i use bel ray water proof greese and no mater what as long as i ride i will continue to greese my seal around my air filter lip
-
I do NOT grease the filter lip.
back in the day.......we greased because the filters did not seal well against the air box and when the filter pulled away it allowed dirt to drop in. But with the more modern cage, bolted on designs there really is no reason to do it any more.
Can you pull on the inside edge of your filter and pull it out from under the cage? If you cant greasing does nothing but make a mess.
I do however use good air filter oil. I like Bel Ray. I also have 2 spackle tubs.....one for diesel fuel to clean the oil out of the filter (and wash with Polmolive dish soap) and one with filter oil in it so the filter is saturated.....then squeeze the excess back in the tub and pop the lid back on for the next time. I cut the BelRay filter oil it slightly with gas to thin in out some.

...greasing does nothing but make a mess.
+1

I grease. Works good for me.
-
I grease, but the Proseal sounds like it does a good job. If the Proseal works and keeps the crap out of the engine why wouldn't I use it? I think it's like anything else in life as technology and times changes (sometimes good sometimes bad) and after careful consideration of the situation I may change my mind.
-
yes i grease also.
-
I also grease too but i am also old school too, why change something that works so good. :-D
-
totally grease! why would you risk catosrophic engine failure because you didnt run some cheap grease around the filter rim?? thats like wipin before ya poop, it just doesnt make sense!- larry the cable guy haha
-
I use Transgel. It's easier to clean, since foam filter cleaner dissolves it much better than grease.

I'm one, but I'm 42. I was taught to do it with everything (almost).
-
I use white grease. It dries out slightly around the outer lip area but stays very moist from that point on inward. After I get the box area completey clean I use a vaccum inside the box and intake opening just to make sure nothing is in there that could cause a problem with performance.
-
Grease ur lip for sure!
-
I had an air filter on my 250 try to glue itself to the air box with the no toil, only using oil. When I changed it every couple rides, it worked well and was clean, but after sitting awhile, it wanted to stay. I use the proseals, and it was seriously stuck to it. My new notoil kit came with No Toil grease, so I know what to do with it. I previously thought the pro seal eliminated the need for grease, ....nope.

NO GREASE!!!
I've had issues with rim grease melting in the hot Florida summer and fouling my plugs, I must mention this happened with the old formula No-Toil rim grease, I quit using the grease and have never fouled a plug since. I use No-Toil filter oil/cleaner, and filters on my bike. I also use Twin Air and Moose filters on my wife and kids bikes w/ the No-Toil oil/cleaner, if they are done every week the filters last forever. But don't oil up a filter and bag it as a back up, it will disintegrate if you don't use it right away. Just put a clean filter in a bag, keep the No-Toil oil with it, if you are going to need it that particular day, oil it up before the event, let it air out to evaporate the alcohol, and bag it up so it's ready when you pit.
