Title: yet again, clutch question..
Post by: campaug86 on September 15, 2008, 11:18:13 AM
so, i replaced the frictions in my 1989 kx 250. the dealer gave me 8. when i disassembled my clutch there were 9 frictions and 8 steels. but it was obviously wrong because my clutch lever on the case was not in the correct position. pointed more toward the jug and not perpendicular like it should. so, i replaced my clutch with the 8 frictions. got everything buttoned up, and the brand new kawasaki factory replacement clutch cable is way too short. so short that it would dissengage the clutch. but not by much.  i figured this was normal. so i took it out in the back yard, took off just fine all was well, then i got on it and it slipped bad. i did this twice. then i shortened the clutch rod inside the cases and that fixed the problem with the lever and the cable, but, the clutch still slips even with about a nickles worth of freeplay in the clutch lever on the perch. so... i am going to put new steels in it hoping that it will fix it. i am assuming that this is like brakes on a car. you need to break it in with a new non directional finnish on the steel. also, what do you guys do when you install a new clutch into your bike?

also, i soaked the frictions in atf type f for 24 hours before assembly, atf type f is what i run in the transmission.

There are 8 frictions and 7 steels, make sure you replace the springs as well, weak springs will cause slippage. For me I change the whole clutch frictions, steels and springs that way you know you have all the bases covered.

if it helps, i ran the vin on the frame, its an 88. now im kinda mad at the guy that sold it to me and said it was an 89.. but, cross referenced the p/n for the frictions and the steels and they are the same. after more closely looking at the steels, they have a ridge and very fine grooves in them. in the automotive world, we would machine them, like brakes. or a flywheel. but im assuming they need replaced.
