We have been saving for three years to take this trip and as you know what has happened to fuel prices it is going to be expensive! It cost me $75 yesterday to drive from El Paso to Tucson to pick up the toy hauler rental.
Anyway I will be posting pictures and our path from New Mexico, Colorado,Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, California, Nevada and AZ!
-
Where are you going in Nevade Armigosa ? are you doing Dumont in california ?
-
^^^ kinda goin off what BDI said... if your gonna be down around the southern nevada area id be down for a dumont/amargosa ride if you want any company.
-
count me in if your going to dumont/amargosa as long as its an open weekend for me. i don't really like amargosa but would go. i love dumont.

UP Date......
We got off to a rough start, mechanical problems, minor medical emergency, etc. We decided to blow off North Dunes in Walden, Co due to time constraints. Instead we headed for Killpecker Dunes outside Rock Spring, WY. We arrived at the dunes at sunset and it started to rain. It rained all night and the next morning it was very cold and wet. Again we decided to skip it. Then we headed out almost 60 miles of some very wet and slipper, about 5 miles up the road we met up with some oil field workers in three trucks. They told us there was no way we were going to make it out and we needed to back up 1/4 mile and turn around. I made it about 1/8 of a mile when the trailer slid off the side. To make a long story short the guys spent the next three hours getting us out and headed the right direction. They followed us 30 miles out the other way till we got back to the highway. What heroes, they wouldn't even take a dime for all there work!
I am really sorry we didn't get to ride at Killpecker, the dunes looked sensational!
Although I never want to see that road again!
Alan
PS are we having fun yet?

dang, thats really too bad you didn't get to ride at killpecker. i've wanted to take a trip there(only 6-8 hrs. southwest of my hometown) but have not had time as of yet. that's some very ugly country around killpecker but north of there 50-75 miles it turns into some of the most beautiful mountain country you've ever seen. i'm glad you found some quality Wyoming boys to help you out in your time of need. a small side note here, did you know that killpecker dunes is the 2nd largest active sand field in the world? that info came straight from www.duneguide.com. hope the rest of your trip goes better. Active sand feild :? Are there inactive sand feilds if so whats the difference. Whats the definition of an active sand feild :?
bdi, yes there are inactive sandfields, but i don't have an example for you. inactive fields have grown to the size they are and the sand supply has run out. an active sandfield is one that is currently growing and has a ready supply of sand blowing into/onto the dunes making it constantly grow in size not just growing in acreage. wyoming has plenty of dry arid ground in the southwest part of the state making it the perfect sand supply for growing Killpecker dunes. the USGS states that it is the largest "living" dune system in the USA. i have not gotten to ride these dunes but i hope to this next summer. i've seen these dunes and they are HUGE. 10,500 acres. i don't think that they are nearly as tall as st. anthony though, just alot more acres to ride on. it's so big that the article on duneguide.com about killpecker states that they recommend utilizing a GPS to navigate with due to the size of the dunes. would be better worded as actively forming dunes. i would also consider migrating dunes active too. 10,500 acres is hardly HUGE, its a little bigger than dumont. dunes like little sahara, UT 60,000 acres are BIG but HUGE should be something like glamis 150,000 acres. i looked at dune guide it states nothing about using a GPS to navigate the dunes. they do give GPS coordinates to find the dunes. link to dune guide/ killpecker

Let me get this right. You bought a TERYX to go 4 wheel'n but you have more fun 4 by 4'n the truck and trailer. I can poke fun at you because I've been stuck before. My brother and I got permission to cut fire wood from bulldozed trees near a bridge construction site. It was real sandy. We filled the truck and trailer with wood and got stuck in the sand. Unloaded half of the wood, got unstuck, reloaded the wood. Made it about 60 feet and got stuck again. Unloaded half the wood, got unstuck, drove home unloaded the half load of wood. Drove back to get the other half of the wood and someone had stolen it.
Hang in there, we'll watch for your next report.
Little Sahara Okla. moves a foot North each year. They built a new Northside perimeter fence because the old one was buried and people were driving past the boundary onto private property.

Well after 10 days and 2200 miles we finally it made to the dunes! We arrived the St. Anthony Dunes in Idaho. We took a short ride late this afternoon and are staying the next three nights at a great RV park, called Sandhill Resort right on the edge of the dunes. No cell phone , but my at&t air card is finally working!

Thanks for coming up to meet us Chris! ID KX500
We Just rode for 2 1/2 days at St. Anthony's and I got to tell you guys Glamis aint got nothing on St Anthony dunes! They reminded me of being back in the Alps in Europe! They are so tall you can't take any picture and get feel for their size! They are also a bit scary because most of the bowls have lava at the bottom. You don't want to do any blind jumping into or over anything unless you have looked first!
Just a few pic's for now...............
Next on to Oregon!
Alan :-D
-
Nice meeting you and Barb. Hope you enjoyed Idaho. I love it for the diverse dirt biking, sand, desert, and mountains. I'm headed to my favorite high mountain lake Sunday. Have fun in Oregon. Love the pictures. ID KX500

Hey, Alan what is the difference in sand compared to Little Sahara Okla.?
-
Hey, Alan what is the difference in sand compared to Little Sahara Okla.?
St. Anthony sand is darker in color due to the high Lava content. It was very dry and it sucks up every bit of power you can dish out!
-
Alan are you going to dumont california if so when are you going to be there I would love to meet you and go riding with you I also have a couple of budies that would also like to go. Are you going to go through Las Vegas?

Yep! Dumont is high on my list, however can't say when yet! I will keep you posted......
-
We rode the Oregon Dunes today for the first time. It is very beautiful to be on the coast in the dunes next to the Pacific! Lots of large rolling dunes down the center of the riding area maybe 100 footers and they go on for miles. It is just down right cold riding along the waters edge.
The sand seems dry to the touch but it has gobs of traction............
-
I decided to blow off Pismo and spend more time at Dumont & Glamis! We will be hitting Dumont the week of Oct 5th and Glamis the week of the 12th.............
-
its like your on the ,, world tour of sand,,,
-
The Dumont Dunes are very beautiful and steep with sharp drops offs! As you can see we had the entire place to ourselves. We rode around and over the dunes for a couple of days and only saw a hand full of people. The dark sky was a fantastic site, ecxept for the lites coming from Vegas. Without fail more problems with the trailer shortened the stay a day!
We are now on the way to the biggest dunes of all Glamis in the Imperial Dunes. This will be the last stop before we head home after 5,000 miles so far...............
-
MMMM, virgin sand! :-D
-
Alan, you are living my vacation dream. I just wish it wasn't so far to those dunes. What an awesome experience!
-
We saved the biggest and best for last! The last 3 days we spent riding the Glamis Dunes! We forget how big the really are till we go back to visit them again! Today we got up and it was way to windy to ride so we decided to head for home! Hear are some pic's........
Note the two pic's from the same area, one with telephoto and one on normal. Gives you some idea how large the place is! We spent 5 1/2 hours yesterday riding up and down the center of the dune field and only went 16 miles! :-D :-D :-D :-D
It has been a long 5,000 miles and just let me say one thing. If you ever want to go to the dunes and you can only make it to one, Glamis Glamis Glamis Glamis Glamis :-D
-
That is cool! How was the temperatures at Glamis? I need to get back there...
-
I sure am broken hearted we missed you at dumont.
-
Alan
when i was a kid i'd read articles in Dirt Bike about Glamis etc and open class bikes with paddles and dream of riding there and what it must be like.
i doubt i'll ever get the chance to ride that kind of sand - you are so lucky!
despite your troubles so far i bet the trip has been a blast, must be a humbling experience being in such a vast, beautiful landscape.
someday.........
