I have a full blown workshop in my basement. Lately there's been more building materials strewn about than some nice project lumber. Plus, I have a 75 Z1 900 resto going on at the same time - lol. I'd love to be working with my hands like that again.
Oh....I run the family courier service. We have about 18 vehicles from small cars to a 14' box truck. 9-11 took away the trucking part of our company. We used to have 2 24'ers running around JFK Airport on a daily basis.
Before that, I took some time after high school and worked for an old timer repairing trucks and heavy equipment. Did that for 9 years, learned a TON. No book can teach you that stuff. Then, my Mother bacame ill and wanted to retire. So here I sit....at a desk....all day long. But, no one tells me WTF to do. :-D

Electrical Engineer. I am the electrical engineering manager for an industrial plant (Pulp Mill).
I started out during high school trying to make it as a beginning pro MXer. Lots of travelling. Got a reality check at Carlsbad Ca; too many racers with more backing. Later I worked at a hospital as a shipper/reciever then eventually went to back to school (Engineering).

I am a Nissan Master mechanic, been with them since 1979. I am not really too interested in cars unless they are very old or very fast. I have a Mighty Mite, an Isetta and a Greenbriar. The KX500 of course is my favorite toy, fastest too.
If I could figure out how to make a lucrative living in automotive restoration, that appeals to me. Seems to me the wealthy types want a Foose or Coddington ( RIP) type restoration and the rest cannot afford to pay. Guess I will keep pulling wrench for the French.

I'm a Collision Estimator, been doing this for 10 years now.
-
Director of IT for all systems, data, recovery, and all that falls beneath it for a large pharmaceutical company. So, I basically just sit around, make sure people do their jobs, do power point files, and go to meetings.

I have been in the marine industry for about 14 years. Got started right out of high school. Went to trade school but never used that knowledge to date. I have had the opportunity to work for OMC (Evinrude/Johson Outboards) for about 6 years. At OMC I was involved with Manufractioning of the marine engines and then moved on into research and development stages of the engines. Then moved on to Yamaha. I have spent 8 years at Yamaha. During my time with Yamaha I have been involved with providing technical support to our professional anglers, O.E.M partners and dealers. Currently a Technical Advisor on our Marine Products. To date Yamaha Motor Corp. is the best company to work for. http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard/products/lifestylehome/home.aspx

Carpenter, jack of all residential construction trades. Mostly siding and exterior trim but since things have been a little slow we do it all... finish carpentry, cabinet installation, decking, and remodeling. I've been in or around construction since I was 7. The only bad part is that I am only 31 and my back and knees are almost toast. I would like to go to MMI and work on bikes though. Seems to be the only thing I can imagine being happy doing day in and day out. I wouldnt mind working at one of those fancy Harley dealerships that have popped up everywhere... or a Kawi dealership.... whatever. I just dont know how well all that pays or how enjoyable a work environment it really is... from the outside looking in it sounds like a dream job though.

Whoa... I salivate wildly just to THINK about what kind of MASSIVE scale of MX track you could produce with that kinda machinery at your disposal. The mind reels in giddy delight! Massive Step-UP or something the size of the Empire State Building... the kinda thing you could launch a school bus off of!

Don't waste your time. One of my employees decided to take up that hobby and put in his retirement notice and headed to MMI. He finally did graduate and got a job working for one of the largest HD dealerships in the state for a whopping $11.50 /pr hour. After awhile he got promoted to about $15ish.
He did finally quit. Said it was hard work and was making nearly a third of what he was making, prior to retirement, as a master mechanic. So, he has started his own company doing small repairs here and there and is working for another IT firm close by.
Sad really, but he was able to buy some kick-ass Snap-On tools for around half price with the MMI discount or something like that. Still not worth it though for $12 an hour and about 50 hours a week.
Just a heads up for you, I would talk to your HD dealership and ask the average pay and startout pay. The Jap dealerships here (Yam/Kaw/Suz/Hon, ect) pay about $8.50 per hour as a mechanic and around $12 for the master mechanic. Good luck buying a house with that pay around here. It might be better or worse there.

i went to mmi and it was the worste decision i ever made. i was a steelworker here in pa. and made nearly 26$ per hour with $2500 dollar bonus checks every three months. so i packed all my stuff headed for arizona. call them and ask them how much a mechanic makes i bet they will say it varies from state to state. well a teacher let me in on the real deal $8.50 to start out. there classes are really beginnerish i learned more tearing my kx down by myself then i could of been tought there so here i am in college to get a real job!!!

so about 1 month ago i come home and my mother is looking like somebody shot the dog. so she takes me downstairs and shows me and tells me that one of the water pipes busted. guess what happened to be right under that pipe? yup basically all the parts from my bike luckily i had most bagged and tagged. but i didn't have the cases bagged so now they are ruuuuuuuuuuuusssstedddddddd!! oh well not riding it anyway i told her, i like buying motorcycle parts anyways it's a hobbie :-D

I will have been selling insurance for the last 31 years in Feb 09. Yes I'm old but I did start selling when I was 19 believe it or not. Along with insurance I tried to break into farming in the late 70s early 80s. Farming was cruel to me. Happy to be in insurance now. Love the mountains in my time off and taking the kids.

Today I am going to look for a job, I previously was employed as a mechanic at a new car dealership. Last night I was suddenly dismissed without explanation after eighteen years there. The only thing said was the company was making changes. The economy is not so good here in Michigan, but I always thought I was safe, due to skill level, work quality, productivity and seniority.
I will post again when I know what I do for a living.

Lots of cool jobs here. I'm a journeyman sheetmetal worker, benchman, fabricator, whatever you want to call it. I've done the whole computerized equipment, big industrial shop deal where I worked with lots of 1/4" stainless, now I run a small shop where everything is old-school, bench lay out, maximum 16 gauge. I like old school better, it's almost relaxing. I build a lot of ductwork, body parts for car restorations. custom range hoods, you name it, it walks in the door. Yesterday I rebuilt the exhaust canister for a 1968 Skidoo. Here's a moose I built for a contest at the local ski hill, hope the picture comes through.
-
Don't be so modest!!!!!! Your an ARTIST Bigfabber!!!! :-o
So were are the custom exhausts??? :-D
Dutch
-
Thanks Dutch, it was a fun project. The contest is annual so I have to come up with something new by about the middle of March. Whatever I build gets sent down the ski hill and off the jump for ariel competition. The moose flipped 5 times when he hit the ground and his lower legs snapped off. I fixed him up and now he's lit up on the roof of the shop. I got paid to build him, and won A LOT of beer.
I've considered a works style segmented pipe, but my bike is too old for the hassle and it would take me too long ever be able to build one for anyone else, too bad, it would be a fun project, maybe for my 500 when it works out... If a guy could find fab specs somewhere...... I've repaired many pipes though. If the expansion chamber is crushed beyond other methods of repair, I'll cut it apart, pound it back into shape and reweld. I can make most look pretty nice, nothing I can do to save a plated finish though. Sometimes on older machines a new pipe can be hard to find. I fix pipes for riders, not the pick-up truck princesses that are just for looks around town. :-D

I am employed again after only six days without a job. In Michigan getting a job is a miracle. I am very grateful to find the same job at the same pay and only having to drive five minutes more to work. The atmosphere is greatly improved at the new job.
I did not enjoy the six days off, as I was quite concerned about losing my house,my hobbies and the prospect of having to sell my toys.
I am still a master mechanic for a new car dealer working on Japanese vehicles.
John
-
thats great news there johnnie! i've been hoping to here this from you for a couple of days now. i hope the new job works out well for you and your family. MADDOGGY
-
Awesome news Johnnie! I have been out of work since mid October... just took the tests and applied at the Naval Shipyard up here for their apprenticeship program. I scored really high on the tests, well above the minimum requirements and was even told that it was some of the highest scores they'd seen. So hopefully this works out but there are thousands of people trying to get jobs there right now. Hopefully my test scores and resume stand out. Say a prayer for me guys... I really need this job.

Your scores and resume are important, and I think a positive attitude helps too. Check the owners manual jeremiah 29-11 for the master plan.
I too really needed this job as I have grown accustomed to living indoors and eating. I need to build a better financial safety net for bad times.
