Title: What was your first bike?
Post by: KXcam22 on February 09, 2008, 04:10:02 AM
My first bike was a Harley Davidson 90.  My dad bought it for me new at a motorcycle show. I just about fainted I was so surprised.  I was 11.  A friend had one and I had ridden it a couple of times.  Well that bike was the bigest POS you could amagine.  It was made my Minarelli and broke everytime I rode it. Fast though, on pavement it would dust off all of my friends minibikes.  I MX raced it a few weekends later.  It had gotten water in the gas so would barely run - I had to push it up the main jump each lap and was the laughing stock of the crowd. My dad must have been embarased because I got a used honda SL70 a few weeks later. That was a good bike. Cam.

1970 Honda trail 70.  3-speed semi automatic.  Fold down handlebars. Gas tank under a very large seat.  Rode it almost every weekend in the desert for 2 years.  Absolutely bulletproof.  Never even changed the plug.

I traded a yard cart for a yz enduro 80 when I was in jr. high. I lived in town with nowhere to hit the dirt, so I rode the streets. The front wheel was bent so bad it was a challenge to ride over like 20 mph. It had no kickstarter and had to be choked while pushing to start. The back tire was smooth as a racing slick, and would barely spin the tire on wet grass, so I never got accused of property damage. The best memory of that bike was riding it to footbal practice on the other side of town. I would trail my best friend, who was our middle linebacker, to practice and back wearing all of our football equipment. It was kinda safe since we were wearing helmets and pads, and could only go 10-15 mph, but I doubt any kids would get away with it today. :-D :-D

Mine was a 70's Honda QA50, I think I was around 7 or 8. 3spd auto trans and it was the best bike within 100 yds of my house. (Of course I did'nt have any neighbors within 300 yds of my house!!!!) I rode the wheels off that bike and my mom was the first person to do a wheelie on it, she never rode it after that. Learned the definition of neutral drop that day. Graduated from that to a 73 lt1 100cc Yamaha. (yep the purple one) Then after about 2 yrs went to a 76 DT400 and KX 420. Kept the 400 and put all the lights back on it and rode it on the street for a couple years. The KX gave me a few bruises to my ego and other parts. I rode alot of my friends bikes back then too, like an 81 yz125 that was ported and flow benched with aftermarket suspension (don't recall what suspension it was though.) A 76 yz 125 with the steel tank. A few different CR's in 125, 250, 480 and 500. Also had a 78 Honda CX500 that I rode back and fourth to college after the DT.  I now have the KX500 and a Goldwing.

85 Zooki DS80.  I don't remember much nowadays, but I do remember that as long as I can remember I wanted a dirtbike.  I would beg my parents like crazy... "No!"  Then I got the DS as a surprise one day.  I was just getting to be too big for it, but it was a great bike to learn on.  The motor was like a tank, small bike but still a 5 speed.

After that, I was on my own.  I was 17 when I saved up enough for a 83 RM 250.  It's definately in my blood.

My first bike was a Cushman Super Eagle. I was twelve or thirteen and so happy just to have any type of motorcycle. That thing was next to impossible to start, always had old and new problems.  I used to ride it for an hour and work on it for two. It weighed about five times what I did and had about three horsepower on a good day.  When I dumped it, the exhaust would burn my leg . Two speed, hand shift, yep the good old days. That thing was a super turd, but I loved it just the same. My Dad worked for Holsum bread in the sixties, he talked the fleet painter into donating some paint, so the Cushman was painted orange and blue just like a Holsum bread truck.  Thanks for the topic, I almost forgot about that old Cushman.

Alan, great pics!  The top pic reminds of my Dads first bike.  It was a Honda 160.  But the windshield on yours......Classic.  The bottom pic reminds of my second bike. A 1971 Kawasaki 90 street bike with the front fender removed and some trials tires installed.  Ran around out in the desert for a couple of years on it. It was my 1st 2-stroke.  Great times.

Alan, that matchless bike is way cool. i really like that picture, makes me wish that they still made bikes in that kind of style. i kind of like to roll old school ya know. my first bike was an old honda, must have been a late 1970's 80cc or so. it was silver and was a ton of fun at 10 yrs. old. i was too young to realize that i needed to check the oil. well needless to say, the fun ended when it seized up. the only thing my dad said was "well, did you learn anything from it?". the next thing i had was an 84 odessey. oh ya, that baby was fun. it put up with intentional rollovers too!   MADDOGGY

My first was a KX80. But at the time was looking at a honda 75 or something, a thee speed four stoke peice of crap. My dad refused to let me have the honda. He said I would out grow it too soon.

Sure enough a few weeks later we ran across a 1980 kx80. Boy was I blown away. At the time it was like a 500 let me tell ya. Never be that good again.............

First dirtbike riding I ever did not as a passenger was on a HODAKA Dirt Squirt 100cc at about 12 yrs old.  I beat the ever-loving sh!t outta that thing just to keep the rest of'em still in my view as they went bombing along in Victorville on plush long-legged Husky 250 XC's and Husky 430WR's.  Man oh man... I've ridden a Hodaka on some amazingly technical trails too.

Anyhoo... next came the neighbors HODAKA SuperRat.  Also a 100cc... shifted IN REVERSE ORDER... had Honda Elsinore Rear Shocks put on it... never been on a bike since that could turn THAT darn sharp.  And boy did that engine seem miles more hyped than the Dirt Squirt.

Then my first "Big Bike"... a '78 Husky 125CR we bought off that same neighbor guy who was pretty much a hotshoe rider as I remember at the time (although I know the me of today could smoke the him of back then).

I'd occasionally get to ride the StepDad's '82 250 XC.  d**n that thing was TALL!!!! 39" seat height!!!  But I'll tell ya this though... not even a K5 could blast thru gnarly sand-whoops as plush as that thing did... but really the only way to turn it sharply was to come into a turn hot and slide the back-end with rear brake, then blast the clutch and throttle.

Then there was a hiatus for a while... then picked up dirt riding again with a'96 DR350SE Dual Sport.  Quickly found myself pushing that thing past it's limits... back to dealer nenxt year and traded-in for a '97 RM250.  d**n that thing was amazing once the suspension sag was dialed in.

then I got the not-so-bright idea that I'd trade-in my [bought new '98 PC800 not paid for] and my [paid for RM250], for a DRZ400S in '00.  The two previous bikes were a wash financially... so it was just them taking them off my hands.

The DRZ was alright in the dirt after getting re-sprung.. but still too heavy.  But I then realized it would NOT work for my occasional needs to bomb down the 405 for 45 miles each way which a sometimes have to do for work.

Then some more life drama...  um... then I sold the DRZ and went back again for some more street riding for a while... then in like '06 I picked up an '01 KTM 450 MXC Daul Sported with Cali Plates.  Was a sweet bike... only had 1 real dirt ride on it... then got married again.... got pregnant... her job situation looked iffy... nervous sold the 450 for some extra cash just in case... she got new job.. worries alleviated.. Papa wanted his toys back... bought a '90 KDX 200 and was gonna restore it... then realized it really wasn't worth the money it'd truly need to get it up to snuff for my needs personally so I gave that to my younger bro beginning of this year when low and behold I spotted this sweet a$$ '96 KX 500 for only $1250.00

I also sold the FZ-1 I had because it kinda felt like maybe it was gonna try to start giving me transmission problems.

And since now I have a 6 mo old... I went the sensible route for the street ride and went back for another PC800... which is like the most versatile and comfy street ride ever with like the lowest possible maintenance you can imagine.

.. now my first street ride was a '76 Yamaha RD125 (twin cylinder 125cc 2-Stroke!)
Then came the '82 Suzuki GS450
Then the '84 XL200 (LOVED this BIKE!)
Sometimes had to borrow brother's old Honda CB450 tank
let's see......then I inherited StepDad's Honda Ascot VT500
Then there was a '93 GSXR 750 (YEAH BABY!!!)
then a hiatus from street... then...
'96 Suzuki Bandit 600cc which I tried to use for commuting from WestLA down to my new job in "The OC"... but I quickly realized the Bandit wasn't gonna cut it because it had soooo much vibration in the crotch area that i felt like I had to piss all day once i arrived at the job.. was in agony... like 1 month later had to go back to dealer and flip it around for something better for long distance freeway jaunts..
thats when I 1st bought my '98 PC800.  I was dumb to ever let that bike go. But I did as i mentioned above.
then another street haitus while I played back aorund in the dirt again...
Then got an 2001 Yamaha FZ-1.. aka... The Wheelie Monster (<--- I Great Bike! BTW Highly recommend if you need a cummeter and don't have to carry lots of things on your commute)

and...uh.. I think that's about it.  maybe forgot 1 or 2 in there.

Be thankful you didn't get the bug in 85, many of my friends quit riding after they bought 85's, not that the 86 was a slouch, they both deserved respect.

Mine first motorized bike was a 1967 Montgomery ward minibike, briggs 5hp centrifugal clutch and virtualy no brakes. then 1968 honda z 50, wish I still had it, 1969 cl90, 70ish SL70, later 70's XR75, then the real bike 76 Hodaka Combat Wombat. In 1983 I got a Suzuki RM500, nasty bike, I had to carry a fanny pack full of clutch levers, I seemed to brake at least 1-2 per ride. Since then I've had a KX125's, 250's, 500's, Yamaha 490's, only 1 Honda XR200.

1980's something Yamaha GT80, I bought it for $50 bucks back then and rode it till it broke. I couldn't tell you how many time I filled the garage up with smoke burning the back tire, neighbors hated my guts, ha ha. Living in the city there was only a small field near my house I rode it to, but for a kid in grade school it was good enough for me.

The bike I learned to ride was a 74 suzuki ts 185, my dads bike(still got it).  I can remember him riding me when I was way too young to be on a bike, with two belts hooking me and him together, what a blast.  Then when I was around 13 I found two bikes in the back of a neighbors house.  My friend got a 79 RM 125 for free(bad shape) and I got a 78.5 RM 250c-2 in a box with a manual for $50 bucks.  Still got it today, a blast to ride and a bit pipey.  Then I moved up too a 92 KX500, rode it for years then traded for a 96 CR 250, man I went from driving a brick to a bike that would handle but lacked that top end hit that makes a 500 a 500.  Sold that one and later on picked up a brand new 2000 kx500 that I till own today.

1977 honda xr75 very relaible and had to be with all the inexperienced kids riding this.  i used to get a running start at small hills in first gear and left it there since i liked how it sounded.  never did blow it up.  my dad then told me it had more than 1 gear.

moved up to a 1978 kdx125 then 1979 rm125 then 1982 kx250 then onto kx500's.  maybe as i get older i will go in reverse direction one bike size  at a time and end up back with an xr75 (or whatever its called now) :-D

First ride was a Honda XR 80, about a 1980 model, I was 9 or 10 when my dad brought it home.  We had a little ford courier pickup with a big camper on it.  He told me to go and get the groceries out of the back of it and when I opened the door I almost pooed myself!  Rock solid like all xr's.  We just put gas in it and rode the whiz out of it.  Rode it almost everyday for a few years.  All my cousins and me learned to ride on it.  Greatest time of my life, almost brings tears to my eyes.  I had a big goofy open faced helmet that was painted with the stars and flag colors, (you know the one) we got a tinted drop down face shield for it that was even goofier but I thought I was the man.

I cant believe I'm the first to say a Yamaha PW50.... I was in the third grade.  I thought everybody started out on those  :-D

I can't believe that there are only 2 of us so far!!!  A yellow and black (classic yamaha colors) 1982 PW50 when I was 4 years old.

27 years later I have a 97 CR250, 98 KX500, 99 KX80, 05 R1 canyon bike, 05 SV1000 track bike.  I still need a few more. :-D

In grade 9 I saved my every cent I earned in a glued shut jar and bought my 1980 RM125. It was 1982 and that's the closest I've come yet to a new bike. It was great. First street bike came a couple of years later, 1982 Honda 750 Nighthawk.

First bike ever was a 1983 Yamaha xt250 I never expected to get a dirtbike because my mum was totally against them. But anyway got her about a year ago took me about 5 minutes to get used to the weight of it and the power as it took a long straight to eventually wind out. I rode the wheels off of it blew the engine and still rode it round. And we just finished rebuilding it about 3 weeks back truly bulletproof.

1st Bike early 70's Gold Honda CT-70, 1st "Racing Bike" Suzuki TS50 with Factory Hop Up Kit (this was my all time favorite). I was helping a friend at his shop, moving a bike in the boneyard, and SURPRISE my little Suzi was grabbing at my pant leg. It is hard to believe after 30 plus years, we would be reunited (very rough shape, will eventually learn how to post pictures here). I brought her back to the shop over a year ago, and in the process of restoring.

Old Timers, if you know of any old Suzuki Dealers that might have old inventory please forward info.

My first ride was a tricycle my Grandmother bought with S&H Green stamps. Then a banana seat 3 speed bike.
First motored was a Rupp Roadster (see photos). Then for three brothers to share a Trail Boss 100 Kawasaki. Then a Husky 250 Mag, the steering stem was weak and doing wheelies all the time didn't help.
I now have a '96 XR600, '00 800RMK 151" Polaris sled, '03 KX500, and '09 XP850 Polaris quad. It's got to have a motor and wind in the face.

1980 MX175 (Yamaha), Keep in mind I got the bike in 1998 (bike was 18 years old). It ran great and I paid just $300 for it. Rode it for a year and moved up to a KTM250 EXC (big move up).  I've really come a long way in the 11 years since that first bike.

my first bike was stealing my dads k11 suzuki [a 1965 two -stroke 80cc lamo-street bike]riding it into the ground and getting chased by cops..i was 13years old in 1976-then i got a 74 mx100 -it got me into dirt biking and i eventually got onto big bore bikes[IT400s]then a new YZ490..in 1993,I got me my first KX500,a 1991 version, which i raced and loved..and regretted selling.......i now got a 2000 kx500 and am re-living my youth all over again YAY!!! I owned lots of bikes over the years[street and dirt, mostly dirt]but i always judged the performance of the bikes i had on the feel of the KX500...
