theres a guy with a custom air cooled yz 490 on ebay he says it makes 100 hp and wieghs 185 pounds ,, he must be wieiging it on his pot scales and dyno ing it on a water bong instead of a water brake

I don't think you could push a YZ490 to the dyno with out it blowing up.

Heres a 490 drag bike, Bryan Raffa owns it. Yamaha Tri-Z 250 frame, +12 swinger. Built, getting an override tranny this year.

What's his 300 foot time? Just because he drag races it dosn't mean it's fast we need some numbers to be impresst.
P.S. even if it is fast it's still a yamaha :-P

I just looked at the launch roost of the honda compared to the roost of the yamaha like they say a picture is worth a thousand words. And what the he :evil: is an override transmission?

i rode an old it490, it was quicker then i thought i would be. i would ride one.
i am a die hard green rider, but
before anyone bashes yamaha, they have built some bada$$ bikes. the from the IT to the TZ750.
it is too easy to bash honda... :wink:

My uncle used to ride yz490s back in the day, he had like six of them but I cant remember more then two of them ever running at the same time and it wasn't because he wasn't a good mechanic. Those bikes would seize if you looked at them wrong. I can't say Im a die hard kawi fan I ride the KX500 because in my opinion it is the best open class power plant that Japan ever produced for a dirt bike. I will only ride suzuki on the street even if you could prove some one made something better. I like Honda dirt bikes alot, CR500 excluded. I think Yamaha makes good dirt bikes, But for some reason I have met a lot of people that I did not care for that road yamahas therefor I will always slam yamahas and the blue T-shirt, yamaha ball cap, matching blue tie down having arrogant yuppies that seem to love them. :-D

last i ckecked (2.5 years ago when i was working at a yamaha shop) yamaha still had pistons available...
a yamaha is ether a dam good bike or a peice of crap... usually when they try to recycle parts.

I think 91 was the last year they made the yz490, if that is the case they would have had to produce parts for that bike all the way up to 2001 by law. They tend to produce parts that are in high demand in abundance and I'm sure they produced an abundance of pistons for that bike.

we have a 80 or 81 yz400 in the shop needing a top end done. anybody know where to get a piston and ring kit for it?
