do cases have to be split to replace crankshaft seals on a 89 500?

Yes, sorry to say, but yes you have to split the cases in order to replace the crank seals.

Yeah, I thought the same thing. I bought some seals and figured it would be like EVERY other 2 stroke Ive done seals on. Pull the flywheel and its right there able to pull out and change in under 2 hours.....but no thatd be too easy! Stupid bike.

dont do that without the proper tools like press and case spliter etc,,,

so this seal replace job might be,remove engine,clean and scrub,remove cyl, intake,and bring to your favorite mech.
