Hey guys,
any links or tips on how to convert a KX500 over to SM? I drove my buddies newly crafted 2007 Yamaha WR450F SM, and oh my god, what a TON of fun!!! I want one!! Thanks,
Rich

That seems to be everyone's reaction to them.
You going to street plate it or just a track machine.
Go over to www.supermotojunkie.com and search for Brian's KX500 tard. Looks hella good. Also Do0rdie on here has one so he'll chime in any time now.
My thoughts are, if your not going to get full on into racing then plate it first with some DOT gear and some dualsport tires.

Here in NH it's a cake walk to register a dirt bike for the street. All's I need is a headlight, mirror, horn, and a brake/tail light. So my plan is to add a Baja light kit, and swap it over to SM.

hi there
i,m from holland and i also have an kx 500 streetplated
its very rare on the dutch streets ,
i luv it really to ride it hard and showing of the greeniemeanie to the spectators
it s way faster then all the 4 strokers sm and i,m allways in a rush :-D
pics,r in the galery and i,m very proud on this bike
its mine now and he,s my reliable and tough 2wheeled racemonsta for ever
if i had to sell everything else i would but this KXer is here to stay
any questions are welcome
grtzz from holland

wildt167, that bike is awesome! Where did you get that front fender? It looks great.
also, what gearing are you running on it? I need to order chain and sprockets soon for my KX500 supermotard project

hi desert panther,
first off all thanx for the compliment
i did the coloursetting and reshape all by myself
now your questions about the fender ..
www.acerbis.com/it/fr check google for the exact adres
they have this fender here in europe i,m for sure in your country you can by it too
my sprocketsetting is front 15/ rear 42 ,
but its no shame going lower like 40/38/36 rear for highway use
only for circuit circumstances is 15/42 okay ,
i run mine flat out in 5th gear at the end of the longstraight
btw what rear tyre are you planning to use ,
for that the widht of the tyre will fit in your swingarm
160 mm is the max and you need an rearsprocketspacer about 4/5 mm thick
you can ask me more i shall try helpin you out
succes
-
oow btw this is me in action on a trainingday
only kx around :-D
offcourse i,m the green/white suit in front
-
off course I'm the green/white suit in front.......wildt167
Pimp and welcome to the forum
Sly
-
That is one sweet ride I wish I could ride my kx500 every day on the street. Not to be off topic but I think the number plate headlight that comes on the new kx450r's looks pretty sweet for a number plate headlight.
-
wildt167, where is a good source of rear sprockets in sumo gear ratios like the 40 or 38 or 36 like you mentioned? It seems that all i see advertised are 45 teeth and up. Can anybody chime in with a stateside supplier for these?

i did see a glimp off it on the new KXF450 streetlegal enduro
but mine,s ok too for now

hey panther..
i,ve been looking for you for the rearsprocket,
www.renthal.com is where 41 teath is available by postalorder.
but i do know that 40/38/36 are made ,
and even other brand sprockets that are modified for the kx rearhub
like re-drilling holes to fit our hub.
reason for not knowing specific info
i,m using my streetlegal just for rides up too an hour or so ,
in builded areas (cityplayground)
then you wont need an 38 or so
and i come nowhere near the highway since thats my Kawasaki ZX-10 territory
did you find your fender yet on that site i gave you? :|
here,s a fiew more piccies of me and me friends and my beloved moto
oow btw the bald guy is me, not a thief figuring a way too steel my beauty haha
-
WildT, you have a Zx10 as well? I see you are about as infatuated with Kawasaki's as I am, LOL I have a ZX-12R (green color of course). Thanks for the tip on the fender, i'll be ordering one soon.
still looking into the sprocket situation. What size rims do you have? Are they laced to your factory hubs, or are they "all-new"? I'm debating on which direction to go for wheels, not sure if i want to do the hooligan mod, which is sportbike mag wheels and brakes converted to motard use. Except that you cannot jump the bike any more like a true motorcrosser. But d**n they look cool as shyte!
So where in Holland do you live? We in the states hear all kinds of great things about Amsterdam. Except the traffic infraction laws. Is it true than you can legally stand on a streetcorner shagging a schoolgirl up the arse while smoking cannabis and not be in violation of the law? :-o But if you get caught speeding, they throw you in prison? :-o
always me,
Desert Panther 8-)
-
hi panther,
i have a ZX-10 /1000 last version of the pre ninja R series build 1991
now the questions ,
my rims are 17"
frontwheel 3,5x17
rearwheel 4,25x17
and yep the wheels are laced on the factory hubs
and i,m a motocrosser from origine so i wanna jump!!
i think its also the toughest wheel around the spoked wheel
but i agree the hooligan mod is nice for posing haha
and all you here from us overhere is true
here you can take a girl from behind,
all doped en smoked
we dance for hours during outdoor tranceparty,s
in towns as rotterdam amsterdam
with speeding its not as they told you
only above 50KM/H they take your permit for 10 days
and above an 100% violation (twice as hard ) they can confiscate your vehicle
the tickets are just huge up 1250 euro
oow here a pic off the big kawa
keep me informed about you progressions made ,fellow green mean freak
-
WildT, I wanna come visit! Sounds me and Amsterdam and Rotterdam would be getting along great! ha ha ha ha :-D
hey, when you converted your bike for street useage, what do you do about the fact that it has no ignition lock/key? I mean, can anybody just jump on your bike and kickstart it and ride away? Or do you have some sort of system such as a keyed ignition to prevent that????
-
hey panther,
you,re welcome !
i.ll show me country to you...
to be honest ,i had an ignitionlock just till last sunday.
during training i felt and the bike flipped right on the front
nothing bad only my ign.lock smashed to peaces
but i have an emergency knob too
and when i,m gone for a while i take the sparkplug cap off
there is a new lock in the backorder ,
but not now .
yet it,s good enough for now
and btw how many know how to start a 500
it,s an art getting them started nice n smooth ,
you know ....
they have to wear boots for sure
-
where are you panther ,
now i have to kick it a little :-D
-
I'm in the American southwest, in Tucson, Arizona
next time you're in the neighborhood, stop in for a cold beer :-D
-
huhuh i don,t drink,
i,m a truckdriver and sober for that
but you have coffee??
where is your house living
-
hey desert panther
whats your status with that project of making a k5 streetlegal,
any progressions made?? :-)
-
NICE!!
-
:-o thats nice too
pretty cool pics!! :-)
i have one for example ,hope ill ever get to burn it like he is
damm how about a powerslide omg!!
-
KX 250/500 hybrid, not mine.
-
are the pics #69 from above yours?
the conversion looks porno :-P
-
#69 is Brian from SMJ.com.
I'm gathering parts for a 250/500 SM hybrid, will be done in the spring.
-
are you doing the conversion like brian,s?
im building a circuit supermoto from scratch
using my k5 dirtbike as base
using my k5 supermoto streetplated as example
-
Brian's is a standard KX500 dirtbike with a supermoto wheelset.
I'm building a 2001 KX250 with an '88 KX 500 motor and supermoto wheelset. It will be purely a parking lot setup that won't see any racing. (not organized racing anyway)
-
f*ck i,m making mistake hehehe :x
brian ,s is stock k5 indeed #69
that 250 frame is from somebody else
-
hey ,
i,m building my mx k5 supermoto myself
i have made few pics for the site too
-
i,ve been shopping for slicks
and did get my hands on a couple of dunlop slicks for 70 bucks
barely used only training
the reartyre is 165-55-17 so big for kx rearfork :-P
tomorrow time to buy 320mm braking disc with bracket
also innertubes for the slicks
-
18 to1 OMG
thats a big tough thing then
but then again its a fine bike to see ,
and you have the big engined bike #105 in the back i understand?
now you,r building a supermoto too i red ?
you have pica,s then ?
here,s one for the green hearts
-
oo nice then!
you have pic of that beast?
i have streetlegal kx500 too,
coil and sm wheels are there and 320mm frontbrake also
this is my k5 btw
-
WildT, I wanna come visit! Sounds me and Amsterdam and Rotterdam would be getting along great! ha ha ha ha :-D

Thats what big locks and a chain are for
-
hey desert panther
whats your status with that project of making a k5 streetlegal,
any progressions made?? :-)
Yeah, i've made some progress, although not as much as I'd have liked. This bike ended up needed a full mechanical restoration, i've replaced two-thirds of the bike it seems!!! Draining my pocketbook and my patience. My biggest hurdle will be the charging system to power the electric lights. I cant seem to find a used one around anywhere, and new ones are like 500 bucks!
-
hey panther!
OMG 500 bucks for light is insane
its sick so expensive that stuff
here in holland there are 2 kx500 for sale both with the coil on it
weird bike it is ,years you see none, then al a sudden even two for sale :|
both bikes are 1500 euro
i,ve been shopping for 320mm disc and bracket
slicks for 1/8 of the new price
now going to buy sumo sprockets and kx250 rearfender for sm looks too :-D
good luck anyway and keep us informed
-
here are my new goodies for the project k5SM
now i,m getting started :-P
-
ive made pic of the shop where im building my KX500SM,
and maintaining off course
you can see parts of k5 everywhere
its small but cosy ,nice neighbours too
now i,m bringing fork and frontwheel to guy,
he will cut from single piece of alloy,
a bracket for 4 piston radialcaliper from cbr 1000 blade ,
then he,s fitting new 16mm radialbrakepump :-P for caliper
this will do the job and he says i,ll have brake feeling never felt before
then a solid nice rolling stoppie would be possible with one finger
-
Menno, excellent idea on the hybrid braking upgrades!, i am planning something similar for my own bike with a Tokico 6 piston caliper from a 1999 ZX-6R.
Your shop looks great, lots of stuff packed in there, looks as it should. :-)What is that little bike sitting next to your ZX-10?
-
hey panther !
funny lill bike that is indeed
i build it from mx to sm myself it was funproject ,
with having some time to spend
its genuine suzi RM50 m.y. 1981
now its become little KX50SM
ment to be a scale 1/2 copy of the big K5 :-D
its 50cc with new prox piston and runs 60 mph  5 gear too!
i love it and never sell her again
-
here,s actionpic :-D
-
now i,m back in business ,
i got my wheels back and put on the slicks
it,s a beginning
now its braking time
fitting the 4 piston caliper and manufacture an adaptor for it
to be continued
-
grtz kx500freak

No,no german races so far. I?m a beginner and will be better before a I go further than Sweden. :-D
-
yeah you have a superb k5 its a mean thing to see
mine are not that aggresive looking ,more vintage green & blue my 91,er
and the 94,er color purple sm under construction
i all ready met wilhelm tell with e-mail
he,s friends with mike , you are buddy,s with mike too i could understand?
he,s got one hell of a kx going on ,also a movie i saw yet 10 times
did you see my pics yet, i,m beginner too first year of sumo
btw the work on the front 4 pistonbrake is progressing
i fitted the disc on and made room for the caliper with the spokes
now i,m fabricating a single 8 mm alloy adaptor plate ,
in between the caliper and the disc .
so the brakeforces are all alligned a 100% straight alongside the forks end
so there,s no room for material that gives way or wrings by heavy use :-D
-
Looking good! 8-)
Be sure you use minimum 10mm aluminium bracket to stop flexing.
Yes,Mike M is a friend of mine, but we haven?t actually meet in person.
Mike doesn?t speak english and I doesn?t speak german!
I write english and translate into german by altavista babelfish.
BUT you can be my translater if you want? 8-)
-
yes doordie i will help translate german > english
english > german just e-mail the parts of text to me and i will translate it

do you have a kx500mx doordie?
i did finish the bracket for the tokico caliper today.
fine tuning and all thing together kost wel over 24 hours of hard labour.
but for a first time and from scratch,
i managed to make quite some braking..i hope if not i,ll do it right over in stainless steel.. :-P
now i will get pics first thing tomorrow,
finally i can go to painting the frame kawi green.
then fit in the rearwheel &break,
and further assembly of the drive chain ,need new chain guide! :x

-
hey freak,
I am unable to translate your question....... I do not understand :?
-
i mean you have a 250 frame ,plastic ,tank handmade aluminium?
in belgium lives didier jadoul ,
he makes these kit s for 500cc engine in 250 frame
looks like this bike
-
Yes, the tank is in aluminium and frame KX 250. I am thinking of removing the oil and unmount the crankcase to see inside what is success
-
better do so,
its to bad to have this issues
i,m waiting for new clutchplates and springs
then my kx500 sm is raceready 8-)
can,t wait to go race with me buddy,s
we have meeting in april ,look at our site under the blue little globe
we have 25 members now
all 4 strokers i,m only 500 2 stroker
-
What would be the site?
Now I dedicate to work, hoping to be able to put everything in order
-
Here is mine, I raced it for the last couple years locally. Awsome bike but hard to keep up with the four strokes.

This will solve your problem in corners,G2-throttletubes and ad a flywheelweight IF you don?t want that "corner-rush"
Nice RD350-400 twin twostroke, more pics of it please! 8-)
-
nice driving with that beast ,you have it still ?
and that project is superb!!
must be a lot of work
keep us posted stroke.n.smoke

Jadoul isn't a easy shop to deal with(french :-D)!
http://www.jadoulmotosport.com/ (http://www.jadoulmotosport.com/)
This is there website, but it isn't much.
In 2003 I went to them and ask if the could find a new (or almost) bike for me.
The Jadoulkit on the picture is a kx250 98/02 model.
There selfs were racing a 2003 kx250 look a like with a aluminum gastank, and thats what I wanted. There "old" kit, isn't suited for mx, the tank gets holls from the sand between tank and radiatorschroud.
Aluminium Tank only was over ?1100,- and total conversion ?3500,-(no not more :-o).
In the end I have never hurt from them after some calls and email's,
from then I raced a RMZ250, completely different
I've been working to much and had some miner problems at work. So no time for preparing my cr250.
I want to swap it for a k5 at vd Vegt.
Don't have a place at home to work on my bike anymore. It's just #@*&% :x :x :x
I've been to Den Helder al day for work, so no time for the bikes this weekend again.
WHEN I GET MY K5, THE WORLD WILL NOW IT
Dutchie

thanx for that info ,dutchie
i tipped joker-fly this site he requested
there was a jadoul on MP year ago,
i knew the thing from 500 meeting so didn,t impress me alot.
think if its in sumo trim ,its much better in place
cause that one was lowered and stiffend like sumo
i hope you will get ur k5 soon enough now ,
so you can ride in nunspeet @ 500 meeting 08
-

GREAT vid pete !!! :-o
the supermoto is truely born out of the mx .
i love the basic bike no fancy muck-up..just a 500 2smoke and big brake
btw check this pica
taken in the mid-eighties
-
You just don't need more bike to have fun
Those were real man on those bikes!!!
Extremle fast and small brakes compered to today's standerds.

Dutchie
-
to be honest .....
i,ve been searching the www for quite a full year now.
and got me quite a map full of kawa-tards :-P

man its the state of art on wheels !
-
got a nice reddie too for you pete!! :-D
this thing is tuned beyond reasonable and ......
a very flaming bike
-
I wouldn't be crying to get that reddie for christmas
But give me that green one now
Cool airbox vent! If money was no option, this would be a build that I want!!!!! :-o
Dutchie
-
haha i luv that red one too its a friggin tard i,d say :-D
and for the kawa that,s a hero what he does with k5,s
that airscoop is for a sort of ram-air we think here .
shouldn,t have to be so expensive at all i guess,
with a little imagination and help from ur friends :-P
and another pic
-
i put up another one for the motards
one of th? alltime hero,s imo,
the man can ride anything and fast too
i just recently did a rolling stoppie for 2 sec orso...
but the sensation was awesome and i wanna learn it for real
it takes lots of skill to do so anyway
-
i was wondering...anyone raced their sumo yet,
here the spring has become a fact and sun is our part.
i will ride tomorrow and in a week we go with the club ridin,
let the good times roll :-D
-
well then ,lets give this one a little kick
i have been training for stoppies ,rolling ones and yes i get as far as a meter yet
also sliding in to a corner has been practiced
wheelies i cant do them longer then 5 meters yet :roll ,too sad
-
GDubb, where are you, got any pointers on stoppies?
-
wooooooooooow thats awesome man!
that guy is not in need of big brakes LOL
he,s stopping just like that :-o
btw the movement of this topic is exact what i was thinkin,
of asking these last months.
its really great david !
allthough i,m not the TS ,i kidnapped his topic back then ,
because that was the only k5 sm topic around
i hope that all the sm riders will come here ,
and together we can make this chapter alive,n kickin, :-) :-) :-)
-
I'm workin' on some pointers... sorry for the delay. I'll finish and get it posted this weekend. I will say that this is a great bike to learn these on. I was surprised at how easy it was.
-G
-
how, bout those pointers and all gdubb  :-)
i have been trying rolling stoppies ,but yo that is awesome if you can handle them,
my first real rolling stoppie was 3 ft or so ,
but the feeling is great.
i will try them while a buddy is at the cam.
so there a laugh on its way :-P
-
i was at the dutch supermoto and spotted some funny bikes :-)
a kawi 250 but then bored to 300 with ktm 300 piston,
that bike ran good against the fooh fiddy,s and all
i advised them to go to this site for more kawgreentalk :-D
also a exceptional nice indian with springerfork and hardtail :-o
and my buddy was standing in that busy startgrid.

New pavement was slippery, fun though. new motor seems good and no issues.
-
awesome pics
thanks for sharing man, i love that slidepic,
-
Sorry I keep forgetting about this thread. But if you are already doing even short rolling stoppies then you are past any pointers I can give you. The only thing I can offer from that point is to try them on a downhill as it helps you keep momentum and keeps the bike rolling longer and not coming to a stop so quickly as on a flat surface.
I have a Sm question though... has anyone researched to see if any sport bike or super bike wheels are close to bolt on for a KX500? I am considering an SM conversion for the street but I have to do it CHEAP. Seems it will be a while before credit or finances will allow me to finance something ready for the street.

yes i,m kind of that far now ,my rolling stoppies are now going kinda scary,
since you have to increase speed big time for longer stoppies
and i dont wanna crash my beloved k5 :|

imo you could go like i did,
i got hubs from my spare mx-rims.
got sec. hand rims for 50 $ in usa dollars.
only thing left where the spokes to buy
these came for me in euro,s 75 for 36 spokes
so a total of about 300 euro i spend on getting the wheels done
-
So did you lace up your own wheels then? I've never done it but I'm sure I could figure it out... just not sure about truing and stuff. Thanks for the info. I would rather have spokes than cast wheels anyways, I was just looking for the cheapest route. Although I do think some cast wheels look awesome on a dirtbike with the directional spokes but I dont want to have to worry about them cracking with impact either if I ever decided to go offroad in sumo trim.
-G
-
i did it myself yes ,
it took me 10h :-Pto lace them and finetune them,
a buddy at the local motorcycleshop true,d and balanced them for me.
-

now i had the luck to run into a 90,s shrouds stickerset,as in pic.
and also new white panels like the other one has ,
they,re almost the same to look at ,only real diff. is the headlight and streetplate.
either way i,m very happy with the new looks.

Dutchie
I've had the K5 engine in there for almost a year now, and I have seen no signs of twisting, no cracks, nothing. Well, I do tend to go through pipe mounts fairly often, but other than that it seems to be pretty solid. I just recently got the 17's. The majority of the time I was riding trails and motocross, and a bit of desert. I've taken some REALLY rough landings and it was just fine.
-
I've got a 04 RMZ and realy like how the bike feels and handels.
The Alu frame conversions are realy great and looks very sweet. But the KXF/RMZ is one of the best designed bike there is. Whith yours, the engine looks perfect in that frame. Now big hole in the frame where the carb is. Looks like it's bild for a 500 engine!

why can,t i be left alone these days,..
some guy sells his conversion without the sumowheels
it,s everything else on the pic for sale.
not so cheap as my other project, but i just can,t resist ..
it,s a jadoul kit i guess from the pic.
'01 engine with boyesen reedvalves involved
nice projects coming one after another :-P
oh and this stuff would set me back about $ 1050

I'm looking around for a beast again. Thinking about a RMZ450 08 or 09, but the K5 is stil

plan is to put in my small chevette
pics will follow hahaha :-D
-
finally made it home after a lousy 400 miles of driving,
i did a testride after arrival and that thing really rocks.
found out that it is an ex-jadoul motor, used in monobike-racing.
which was a single cyl race-event back in the days in belgium .
he kept the wheels and forks&swinger,so i didn,t pay the full price luckely
the cylinder has been reworked and it has a french special pipe,
i even do think it,s a MILLET pipe ?
they,re from france too.
if so ,that pipe alone costs up to 900 E at least for cr500 it does :-o
together with boyesen reeds and fresh top-end it,s incredible fast :-)
pics of how its been transported :-P
this project will move to it,s own topic
-
to give the results of that (thing) what,s laying in my trunk
ill post a pic here too..
my pride ride rebuild :-)

other side 8-)
tank and radshouds is not kawi ,but wtf else could it be ??
any input ??

Okay the more I research getting a Plate (street legal) for my 91 K5. the more Im looking into motoard stuff....
Few questoins. sorry if they have been asked.... but Im going to spout them off anyways.
1. I read that guys lower the suspension travel etc by 2".... Do any of you do this? or do you juts slap on Moto wheels and go?
2. Bigger brakes? How badly do you need them over stockers?
3. Will a 5"x17" wheel fit in the swing arm of the K5.
4. Will you guys bail me out of jail when I get pulled over for terrorizing Southern California on a Stewart Powered Ex Jeff Ward Factory Kawasaki Kx500 Supermoto durring the week, so I can go desert race it on the weekend??
-
# 1 I plated my 04 K5 for riding between the trail heads. We are on the road from 3 to 20 miles at a time. Since I use it for off road I did not lower the bike.
# 2 The bigger brakes are for racing super motard. It's a drag race between corners, you know go fast then slam on the brakes over and over again. I have not had any problems with the stock brakes on the street.
# 3 The chain becomes an issue before the swing arm. I'm running a 17" x 3.50 D.O.T. rim with a 150 / 70 17 D.O.T. TKC 80 dual sport tire made by Continental. It's 5 and 3/4 inch wide at the widest point. The tire fits the swing arm but hits the chain by about 1/8th of an inch. Some say they lace the rim off set to clear the chain. The weather has been great for riding this winter in Okla. City. With the AJ built KX500AF my projects have been put on hold. I'm having to much fun to work on the other bikes. When I get back to the dual sport project I plan on removing the chain and having someone spin the wheel as I grind the left edge of the tire. I have a big hand held grinder with a 9 inch disk. By spinning the wheel I hope it removes an equal amount from the edge that hits the chain.
# 4 Yes! But no weekend desert ride because you must put the bike up as collateral. Of course I will ride your bike to keep it in tip top shape for when you pay me back.
-

Gianni,
Nice work & looking forward to the finished results.
Reading through the post, I noticed Kaw Rider mentioned "freeport" & it looks as though the exhaust Sub Ports & the Front Transfers will be open @ the same time with That Piston with the sides cutout that way. Freind of mine had similiar situation because of the cutout of the piston and the bike ran nowhere near it's potential until he resolved the piston problem. Thought you would like to know now to prevent future headaches.
-
i dubbel checked everething and when the piston is in top end the exhaust ports not freeport , i still have 3mm of piston below the exhaust port
-
I think it`s no problem with shortcircuing with that old barell before -89.
It have only 2 sub-exhaustports which is proberly narrower then newer barells with 4 sub-exhaustports.
Honda piston have another shape at wristpin then Kawasaki piston.
just my 2 cents
-
Here is my new SM,will try it out soon, maybe this weekend or next!

I have the Braking 320mm disc on mine, only problem was that when I got mine there was no avaliable caliper relocation bracket, now my bikes a 90 model which by the colour of your forks your bike is also.
What did you do for a relocation bracket? I had to get mine made up by a local engineer.

tank is jadoul moto sport hard to find now i think , plastic is indeed 250 99' and think 00' is the same . subframe is original K500 but litle changes for the seat , i made alu strips and put them with bolts on the subframe for the seat matches
