Had planned to do this a while ago but it got stuck on the backburner and then had sold the motor. Well shipping fooled up and now I have my 500 back so I'm doing the right thing and putting it in my trike. Check out my gallery on a local forum as I'll be adding pics to it as I go.
Chassis is an 1985 Kawasaki Tecate with an oldshool chromoly extended swingarm, Yamaha Raptor rear shock, KX front master and KXF rear master (new) and a ton of other small parts/mods. HAd a ported/piped/vforce 250 in it but its a little worn and doesn't cut it though it was as fast as a new 660 Raptor.
Motor is a stock 88 KX500. The rear motor mount line up perfectly and all the stock trike stuff (suspension/mounts/swingarm) bolts up around it. The chain is perfectly alligned as well. The engine cradle will be removed and the KX cradle welded in so its not that big of a job. The pipe will need to be cut and turned some to fit the trike.

Couple fresh pics up there on the second page. All the mounts except the top will line up, going great.
-
The motor is in there solid. Motor mounts line up perfect as does the pivot bolt.
More pics in the above link.

:-D Things are going good.
-
lookin good Green! hope you get her goin soon...MK
-
Going good! Got an 89 KX250 tank on the way for it to replace the 85/86 KX5 tank thats on there. The longer shifter from the 250 motor bolts up great, the brake lever is modded to clear the motor and the chain lines up great. Had the chain on there yesterday rolling her back and forth through the gears, like buttah! Wheel spacers and 18 inch fast trekker tires are on. Think with this small of a rear tire a 15 tooth front is going to be needed to put a hurtin on the new 450 racers.

Its loud.
It vibrates.
It scares me!
I love it!

My riding group that I hit the trails by my house with, 6 of them have 3 wheelers. They like your bike big time. They have spent allot of time finding new/old stock plastic. Here's a pic of Paul on Debbie's 200 X. Her bike looks and runs like new.
-
Thats one clean 86 X! Very cool. Are they aware of www.3wheelerworldforums.com ?? Lots of good info and posts over there.
Thanks for posting that!
Madkaw, its goin to be a beast. Probably have it ported/carb bored and the crank trued/welded this winter before I get on the ponds with it.
-
I will say this, the 500 throws more roost at 1/4 throttle then the 250 did at 3/4 throttle.
-
yeah, I bet it does...would HATE to be behind your ass!
-
Do you make people sign a waiver to ride it??
-
Some simple stuff done like the updated needle. I tossed the reed spacer and the airbox in favour of a clamp on. Going to build a filter shield around a BIG TRX250R filter soon. Wired in a YZ killswitch, plopped the 89 KX250 tank on there and removed the packing from the mint stock silencer I have. Shortening the silencer tomorrow and making pipe mounts. Waiting on the right shrouds, parts guy sent me 03-07 KX250 shrouds by mistake.
cheers
-
coming along good Green! kinda like the long silencer though....kinda looks like an afterburner...he he he
-
I like the long silencer too... I would just shorten up the stinger a bit...
-
Only shortened it a bit CR. lol
Its done! The fab work is done so now I ride it until the bugs are worked out and then its time for paint.
wild wild wild

Very cool! I think Its funny how many things kawasaki should have built but chose not to. I wonder If they have a development team that builds crazy stuff like chevy does? If they Don't they should. You can tell you just built It because It's not garage trained yet I would rub Its front fender In that coolant and throw It out side to think about It for a while Kawasakis usually learn fast but they are not very good with children and are more of a mans bread.
-
Kawi would have sold a lot of these if they used the newer Tecate chassis. H**** had prototype CR480 and CR500 powered trikes built that Dean Sundal (publisher of 3Wheelin Magazine) test rode right around the time the ban on production and sale of 3wheelers went into effect.
Yeah, it made quite the mess. Come to discover no waterpump gasket. I put one on, gave her a smack with a wound up shop rag and let her sit in it for a while.
Thanks for the compliments. I'm a big fan of your KX conversion, looks just wild!
