Title: kx 500 quad
Post by: daniboy on June 03, 2007, 05:49:06 AM
my mate has a kx 500 racing quad and it is really really hard to kick over. if we try to bump start it then we would need the whole street to help push.

does anyone have any ideas or suggestions that could help the bike kick over??? :?

do a search at the top. there are a lot of good techniques for starting these big dogs. but number one, make sure the jetting is right. and a reed spacer will help.

I voted for none.  Also, is it hard to start when it's warm or just cold?  Or. is it hard to start all the time?  If that's the case, you prolly need a top-end and maybe a full rebuild.

What's your fuel mixed at?

This sounds different then most but if the KIPS is sticking then it can be a bear to start. The bike does not like to start if this happens this kind of goes with the rebuild if it has not been done in a long time then this can make the bike hard to start. I voted none also hehehe. Good luck.

Does the quad use a kx length kicker?

ma mate is about 5ft 8 and barely ways anything so..
and it hasn't moved in 2 yrs but we did have it fired up the other day for about ten minutes. i know this is not long enough before anyone says anything lol
and i would love to see someone push that quad while its in gear!

I think I would lengthen the kicker to give more leverage. :-D

The KIPS sytem has a built in decompresion system that makes the engine easyer to start (not easy) by bleeding of compression at low cranking speed. If the valve sticks it can not bleed off the compression and you will were your leg out trying to kick it. I had this problem and cleaned the system and now start my bike with choke open three med kicks and one full kick when cold and about a 3/4 kick when hot. I hope this makes sence a freind of mine showed me this he also has a K5.

when the kips valves are in the o rpm postion the are actully not sealing part of the booster port  channel until engine starts and comes up to idle speed so some cranking pressure bleeds off through  the exh boosters

Check jetting chart for your temp and elevation. it is right on the money. I believe what happens is the kips powervalve allows for different port timing and less pressure at low speeds compared to other mfg's. i.e. Hondas have no powervalve in their 500's.
This sight is for this purpose for me. I have local guys with opinions and now global guys with opinions. Listen to all, and I find the common answer from all. Doesn't matter if your an expert, novice, old fart, young kid, global member or newbie or even a smartass, whatever it takes to get my k5 running well and keep it that way. Thanks everyone for your two cents on all threads!!!!!!

Didnt mean to start a rift here. I had no idea until I was working on my bike with my freind and he found the problem. I weigh about 225 and I was having trouble kicking my bike. I was told that it does not bleed power like the CR, the valve closes when the RPM comes up to idle so the power loss is not there. Good luck with the quad and hope all is good with the motor.
