Title: New guy from Florida
Post by: 96kx5 on May 12, 2007, 02:07:23 AM
Hello :-D.  Just bought a 96 KX500 a couple weeks ago.  This is the first 2 stroke dirtbike I've had in several years.  I am trying to find out what mods need to be done to it on here- so far looks like V-Force, FMF pipe, and spacer.  I bought the bike from the original owner and he swears it only has about 20 hours on it since new.  It is all original in excellent shape!  Original tires, no tears in the seat cover, original chain and sprockets, etc.  So far I've ordered some pro taper bars for it.  I kinda hate to start modifying it!  My last bike was a YZ400F and I love the power the KX has!  It still seems kinda slow though because I'm used to my GSXR 750.  Anybody else on here around Ocala FL?

Welcome! If  money is tight I would go for the Pipe and reed spacer first. The FMF Gnarly with the spacer will make an amazing difference in performance! :-D :-D

Welcome,
There seems to be a lot of new KX5 guys,  :-D (I'm one too)
Several guys here are always squeezing more out of these things.
I wonder how far the factories could have gone with R&D had these things not gone out of "Fashion".
Take care and I think a little research can yield big gains.

Yes this is a great site :-D.  Theres a KX500 on Ocala4sale for $500.  Don't know if it's a piece or not but it is $500!  A week after I bought my KX my buddy went and got a CR500.  I just bit the bullet yesterday and ordered pro taper bars, mount kit, 92 kx250 rear fender, v-force reeds, FMF pipe and silencer, spacer, radiator braces, and extra air filters.  I've shot my wad for a while! When this stuff comes in I'll get it on there and then start in with the jetting.  Where in FL are you?

Welcome 96kx5, this site is geat for tech questions and new ideas too. They even have riding tips. Already have been helped plenty of times by these guys and it sounds like you're reading tips from the right guys. My upgrade tip is to check out the straight 92-93 rear fender, and think about modifying the silencer. My k5 is a wheelie monster  and has resulted in shredding many fenders, 2 silencers and a sub-fame ( only had it a year ). Shortening it won't help on the rear fenders, but it has saved me money and damage to silencer, which sticks way out there, and the sub-frame that the pipe goes thru. The only down side is that riding parks in Indiana now want to do decible tests on bikes to cut down on noise pollution. The only test my k5 fails!!!!! Later
