Title: Who rides Glamis?
Post by: alan on July 26, 2003, 04:31:31 AM
My Buddies and I have a trip planed the week before Thanksgiving to Glamis! Any body out there ride there on a regular basis? I have made a few calls and I do know about the permits and flag requirements. I ask about the new sound rules and I was told they are just getting started on that and they will only be issuing warning this year. I am not sure I believe that! Will my stock KX5 Muffler pass the sound test and do you have to have a spark arrestor? The arrester sounds like a dumb question, but I was told If it is a California state park that you had to have one anyway. Like I am going to set the Dunes on Fire!

Hiya Alan! We rode Glamis eight times this year before it got too hot. We love the place, and out there, big bores (two wheeled and four) rule the roost! let me see if I can give you some good intel: Permit and whip required=yes, 96 db sound rule this season=no, stock KX5 silencer=yes, Spark arrestor (even in the sand)=yes. If you have the scratch, I suggest throwing an FMF I.S.D.E. legal silencer/arrestor on there. I have one on my KX5 and it did not impact the performance much if at all. I think it may have taken a bit off the top, but fattened the middle. Just my .01999 worth.

As far as the week prior to Turkey Day...we are still trying to decide if it will be better then, or to take in all that is Glamis during T Day. Luckily, we all have time to kick it around and see if we can meet up to put faces to names. Hope I helped you out a bit.  :)

I go to Glamis a couple of times a year.  The flag law is enforced along with registration.  Of course....they cant really catch u on there slow ass quads.  I bought an aluminum flag mount that straps on the the silencer.  It works much better than mounting it to the swing arm bolt.  If interested I can post a pic.

Thanks for the INFO! The silencer/ arrestor are you referring to US forestry approved, like the FMF Turbinecore spark arrestor muffler?

It would be great if you could post a pic of that mount!

Hi Alan. A picture is worth a thousand words. This is the one on my bike...which is a big aging, but potent just the same. Yes, it is U.S. Forestry approved. Take a look:

Title: FMF Muffler / Spark arrestor

I was looking in a catalog today and I see that FMF has a series II out that will also meet the 93db sound level rule. Does anyone know if that  one is available for the KX500 FMF Gnarly pipe? And if so is anyone running one, I would like to know how it effects the proformance.
