looking at a 18" wheel. the guy selling it says it is from a 87 k5. however it does not have drum brakes, it has a disk. the disk would mean its at least 88' right??? I really need an 18 for my 91 k5 and i'm hopin i have a winner here. any knowledge from you that are in the know? thanks, MADDOGGY

well, if it has the disc, it sounds like the one your lookin for.
may the force be with you!
-
am i right to assume that because it has a disk style brake on that 87 wheel that it would fit my 91 k5? :? yes, i know what happens when i assume. :-D
-
look on some sites to find the year range for the bearings and that should give you your answer.
-
bearing range is from 86-96 and the bearing changes from 97-04. im still not convinced that the hub will be the same as far as disk offset etc...

The rear disc was first used on the 86 KXs. I did use a 18 inch rear wheel from my 88 K5 on my 90 KX 250. I swapped the spacers, otherwise the hubs were the same. Not sure about the 87 though.

for 150 you can build a pro-wheel if you got the hub.

I currently run a 19"(p.o.s. came on the bike) that I will end up running only paddles on. tryin' to get an 18" somehow to run knobbies on.(IRC M5B) I may have to buy a junk 19" to scavange a hub out of and ,do as you said ,and build my own. I do love the look of a black rim :-D :-D thanks for the replies madkaw. how about it guys? will that 87' 18"er fit on my 91'k5?
-
do you just like the 18 better? and if so why?
-
the 19" wheel limits you more. there are less tire options that will fit the 19. far more tire options with a 18" rear wheel.as i said before I really like the IRC m5b tire and it's not available for 19" wheels. the 18 also gives you a little more room in the swingarm. my 19 already rubs the airbox flap sometimes with new chain front adj. notch. my flap is now paper thin on the edges. time to order up$$$.
-
mmmkay...sorry to hear about your flap man, thats horrible...did find that tire in a 19" though

so i took a chance and bought this wheel a couple years ago. 87 k5 wheel 18". been in my garage since purchase due to pure laziness, anyways i checked the fitment yesterday only to find that the hub is around 19/32" wider than the 88-96 hubs. i tossed around the idea of machining new spacers but after thorough measurements and checks, it just won't work. the spacing and offsets for disc and sprocket are all wrong. i decided to post this info in case anyone was considering doing the same thing.
